Participants in the Masters programme at Edinburgh College of Art are “makars”—artists, writers and scholars who fully contribute to intellectual and social life—they are people who make things happen. It is by following this model that our Masters programme has established a particular place in the recent history of art as a supportive yet critical environment in which to develop a distinctive practice. Our Masters programme nurtures the educational value of students’ achievements, encouraging them to make their imagination social.

Our Masters programme functions within a dynamic School of Art, where the focus is on building a supportive creative community that encourages a rigorous and productive tension between theory and practice. As well as pursuing and developing their own independent research our students often work in groups as part of the programme, and we are keen to select applicants based on their ability to work well as part of a creative team.

Edinburgh College of Art is part of The University of Edinburgh, one of the world’s leading research universities. Masters students are encouraged to take courses and engage in interdisciplinary research projects in the arts, humanities, social sciences, science, engineering and medicine offered across the University and to collaborate with our many non-academic partners.

Our emphasis on collaborative practice and innovative teaching and research has led in recent years to our graduates being selected for major residencies, exhibitions and prizes such as Bloomberg New Contemporaries, Saatchi New Sensations and Edinburgh International Art Festival.

Faculty
There is a well-developed, reciprocal relationship between the School of Art and Edinburgh’s contemporary art sector, ranging from Scotland’s National institutions to artist-led initiatives. Masters students benefit directly from our partners’ teaching and research input into their work, as well as from the considerable resources and experience they offer. For example, first-year students have the opportunity to exhibit at the Talbot Rice Gallery, while the School of Art invites prominent artists, critics and curators to deliver our Friday talks. This semester’s visitors include Mark McGowan, Wendelien von Oldenborgh, Susan Hillier, Agata Pyzik, Michael Fullerton, Ciara Phillips, Hayley Newman, Egill Saebjornsson and Andrew Hunt. All visitors are available to talk to postgraduate students.

Permanent faculty includes a mixture of practicing artists, critics, visual culture scholars and curators. Many members of staff combine two or more of these roles bringing an exceptional diversity of expertise and experience to our postgraduate programmes.

Current faculty include:

John Beagles (Programme Director), Keith Farquhar, Torsten Lauschmann, Kristin Mojsiewicz, Maria Fusco, Andrew Sneddon, Susanne Ramsenthaler, Susannah Thompson, Angela McClanahan, Laura Edbrook and Dane Sutherland.
