Held in conjunction with the Grey Art Gallery’s exhibition, The Left Front: Radical Art in the “Red Decade,” 1929–1940, this symposium will bring together contemporary artists, curators, and writers to discuss socially engaged artistic interventions in the urban sphere and ask panelists to respond to the question posed by the exhibition, “what could a revolutionary art be today?”

Panel speakers:
Dread Scott (artist, activist)
Johanna Fateman (musician, writer, cultural critic)
Carlos Motta (multi-disciplinary artist)

Moderated by:
Eva Franch i Gilabert (Executive Director and Chief Curator, The Storefront for Art and Architecture)

Organized by the Art Department, with the support of the Division of Humanities & the Arts and the Simon H. Rifkind Center, City College of New York; and co-sponsored by New York University’s Grey Art Gallery.

The Art Department of The City College of New York is a dynamic community of engaged artists, scholars, educators, and learners, promoting innovative art practices, thought-provoking scholarship, and progressive pedagogy that contribute to the fields of art-making, design, art history, and art education, both locally and internationally. Weoffer distinguished choices for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the arts. Study and create art in the heart of New York City with faculty members actively engaged in the NYC art scene as well as national and international forums for art and scholarship.

The MA in Art History at CCNY is a 30-credit academic program with the option to pursue concentrations in Art Museum Studies or Art Museum Education, both of which are 36 credits. The program offers an array of art history and museum-based courses specializing in global modernisms. The dynamic visual arts of New York, including its thriving contemporary art scene, are often featured in the courses, and the city’s diverse museums and galleries are available for research and internships.
