The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, is pleased to announce the release of Art for Rollins: The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, Volume II. This catalogue, featuring full-color images and texts by curators and scholars of contemporary art, highlights new acquisitions to the Alfond Collection since the publication of Volume I in 2013.
Art for Rollins, Volume II documents the growth of the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, a concept conceived by Barbara and Ted Alfond as a gift to their alma mater Rollins College. Intended to serve as a visual syllabus, the collection stems from a vision of affording students the benefit of interdisciplinary learning outside of the classroom. Part of the permanent collection of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins, this group of contemporary works, currently containing pieces by over 96 artists and collectives, has reinvigorated and broadened the scope of the museum’s holdings. “The Alfond Collection has at once added important contemporary artists to our collection and inspired engaging conversations and new curatorial narratives for our museum and our students,” notes Ena Heller, Bruce A. Beal Director of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
The works in the Alfond Collection are displayed at the Alfond Inn as well as at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, both located on the Rollins College campus. This public placement allows not only students but also members of the extended Winter Park community and visitors to engage with world-class art. New acquisitions by 47 artists are presented in Art for Rollins, Volume II. This includes works of art by María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Rosemarie Castoro, Melvin Edwards, Charline von Heyl, David Hockney, William Kentridge, Trevor Paglen, Hank Willis Thomas, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and Jack Whitten, among others.
Art for Rollins, Volume II, includes a foreword by Malcolm Rogers, Ann and Graham Gund Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as an introductory essay by independent curator Abigail Ross Goodman, who charts the development of the collection and discusses the continued goals and aspirations for its future. Cornell Fine Arts Museum curator Amy Galpin’s essay on newly acquired works by Latin American artists, “Contested Definitions: Latin American Meanings in the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art,” delves into one narrative of the many stories told by the art in the collection. The catalogue also features a dialogue between Barbara Alfond and Ena Heller. In the pages that follow, curators and academics provide insight into the artworks that have been recently acquired, as well as the diversity of subjects, conversations, histories, and theories engaged by the art in the Alfond Collection.
