Climbing Invisible Structures. Ritualised Disciplinary Practices in Social Life is a curated visual arts residency exchange and exhibition programme organised by the Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts (NAC) (Lithuania), in collaboration with the Office for Contemporary Art Norway, the Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale (Norway), the Skaftfell Center for Visual Art (Iceland), and the Ars Communis Residency Centre YO-YO (Lithuania).
Ritualised disciplinary practices can be seen as both symbolic and instrumental not just in shaping, impressing and reproducing behaviours and identities; they are also instrumental in learning and in the production of knowledge. Rituals are not only inherited static traditions; they are subject to change, and they can also be creative. New rituals can be generated for relational and convivial purposes, or as parts and instruments of the new cultural and creative industries. E-learning, social media and streaming services have affected some of our most familiar rituals, and created new ones. Artists who participate in the project will be invited to think what impacts these new rituals have on their (artistic) practices.
The programme is curated by Eglė Mikalajūnė (Lithuania) and Samir M’kadmi (Norway).
The programme starts in August 2015, with ten two-month-long residencies: one in Iceland and three in Norway for artists from Lithuania; and five in Lithuania for artists from Norway and Iceland. All the residencies will be hosted by the partner institutions. The artists in residency will be commissioned to produce new works, which will be presented to the public in exhibitions held in Lithuania and Norway in the first half of 2016. A joint seminar at NAC with all the participating artists and a series of artists’ talks will be organised during the period of the project.
One Icelandic, four Lithuanian and five Norwegian artists will be selected for Climbing Invisible Structures, each of whom will receive a 2,400 EU artist’s grant, free housing, travel expenses to and from the residency, seminar and exhibition sites, and a production grant of up to 2,800 EU.
Eligibility:
Visual artists based in or being nationals of Norway, Iceland or Lithuania are welcome to apply. Collaborative teams can apply, with the understanding that only one artist’s grant, one production grant, one studio and one living space will be allotted to each team. Participating artists will be selected by the curators and residency hosts. Applicants will be selected on the basis not only of their work and exhibition history, but also on their specific proposal for Climbing Invisible Structures.

End of September 2015: four-day-long seminar at NAC
October–November 2015: residencies at the Ekely artist house of Office for Contemporary Art Norway, Skaftfell Center for Visual Art and NAC
January–April 2016: exhibitions in Lithuania and Norway
