“There’s nowhere quite like Middlesex to embark on rigorous art and design investigations. The combination of location, facilities, expertise and partnerships will galvanise you to delve deeper and achieve more than you ever thought was possible.” –Anne Massey, Professor of Design

Art and design research at Middlesex University spans all art disciplines, drawing on international expertise and collaborations with leading organisations such as the ICA, National Maritime Museum and Tate to spur ground-breaking work that challenges traditional practice. 100% of our research impact was classed “very considerable” and “outstanding” in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), and we are ranked in the top 20 UK institutions for art and design research outputs and research power—a key measure of capacity and critical mass.

Our home of research in art, design, visual culture and electronic arts is the Art and Design Research Institute (ADRI), a vibrant community with an art school ethos. ADRI supports the School research culture, research clusters, staff and doctoral programme with events, symposia, research workshops and funding.

Current projects by Middlesex University staff members include:

Towards hydrocitizenship: connecting communities with and through responses to interdependent, multiple water issues
Our contribution to this multi-institute project, supported by a large grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Connected Communities programme, is led by Professor Graeme Evans with Simon Read and Loraine Leeson and explores how communities in the Lee Valley area of Greater London are brought together and impacted by environmental assets and risks.

Cinefication
Professor of Contemporary Art, Ergin Çavuşoğlu’s large-scale film and sculpture project, looks at the Soviet model of film dissemination as a means of propaganda and applies it to comment on the current globalised system of “cinefication” of the arts.

Lambeth Floating Marsh
Dr. Loraine Leeson has raised nearly 25,000 GBP from the Western Riverside Environmental Fund for this art/science collaboration, designed to support biodiversity in the River Thames via a floating reed bed to be moored in the river opposite Tate Britain on the site of the original Lambeth Marshes.

Feminism-Art-Theory
Following the publication of Feminism-Art-Theory 1968-2014: An Anthology this summer, Professor Hilary Robinson is now working on a co-edited volume in collaboration with Maria Buszek, titled A Companion to Feminist Art—a series of 25 commissioned essays that evaluate and assess the state of feminist art practices now. She is also working on a history of the feminist movement in art, with an international scope.

For students interested in pursuing research at Middlesex, we specialise in and welcome applications in the following areas:
– Art practice as investigation
– Community practices
– Design and urban cultures
– Diaspora, difference and other cultures
– Electronic and digital arts
– Feminist theory and practice
– Visual culture and curating
