The Freedman Gallery at Albright College is pleased to present The names of objects might as well fall off, a solo exhibition of recent work by Queens, NY-based artist Clare Grill. The exhibition will be on view in the Main Gallery from August 27 through October 16, 2015 and is organized by Erin Riley-Lopez, curator of the Freedman Gallery.
Clare Grill’s six large-scale paintings may start out with a specific object in mind, but that is quickly obscured through process and technique—which is why the title of this exhibition, taken from the epic poem Midwinter Day (1978) by Bernadette Mayer, is completely fitting. Written in a single day, the poem takes the reader from waking dreams through the day and into the night; it is the minutiae of the poem, tracing the day, which perhaps is what makes it so interesting. The same could be said of looking at Clare Grill’s paintings: it’s all in the details. One must spend some time to really “see” the work.
Grill will lecture on her work on Thursday, October 1 at 4pm in Klein Lecture Hall, followed by a closing reception from 5 to 7pm in the Freedman Gallery.
A full-color, comprehensive catalogue will accompany the exhibition, including documentation from Grill’s recent exhibition at Zieher Smith & Horton Gallery, New York as well as essays by Erin Riley-Lopez and Chris Sharp, a writer and curator currently based in Mexico City.
About the artist
Originally from Chicago, Clare Grill lives and works in Queens, NY. Since receiving her MFA from the Pratt Institute in 2005, Grill has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. Solo exhibitions include Zieher Smith & Horton, (New York, NY), Diane Rosenstein Fine Art (Los Angeles, CA), Soloway Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Reserve Ames (Los Angeles, CA), Fred Giampietro (New Haven, CT), Edward Thorp (New York, NY) and Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT). Her work has been exhibited in group shows in Baltimore, Chicago, Seattle, St. Louis, New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Denmark and Bologna. She was a visiting artist lecturer at Maryland Institute College of Art (2013) and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2011). Her work has been reviewed in Artforum, Modern Painters, ArtNews, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe.
