The international conference on “Critical Practices: Educations from Art and Artists”
2–3 October 2015
This major international conference on the question of art education and its critical agency in the contemporary world will include contributions by Dave Beech (London/ Gothenburg), Maj Hasager (Lund), Steven Madoff (New York), Per Nilsson (Umeå), Katya Sander (Berlin/ Copenhagen), and Rod Stoneman (Galway).
The conference will explore the potentials and conditions of contemporary art education with particular focus on the role of art and artists in generating and sustaining critical practices in an expanded and highly contested field of education. A key question presented to participants is that of the role of artists and artworks in the education not only of artists, but in education more broadly conceived.
If we could once have taken as a given that the education of artists would be led by artists, and by the singularity of the encounter with artistic practices and works, we see that this position is increasingly challenged by developments in organisational practice and the changed dynamics of public institutions. At the same moment, we encounter in debates among critical arts educators a revisiting of foundational moments in the development of the art academy and of contemporary art’s different pedagogical heritages.
The conference organising team includes Leslie Johnson, Khashayar Naderehvandi, Paulin Nande, Mick Wilson, Mappe Persson, Klara Björk and Henrik Hamboldt.
Participation is free but places are limited; advance booking recommended. To reserve your place at the conference, please sign-up on our website.
Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg is a dynamic platform for the artist, author, filmmaker and photographer. We are especially focused on artistic interaction and artist-led cultures within contemporary art, film, literature and photography. Valand Academy is centrally situated in Gothenburg and closely integrated with the cultural life of the city, including collaborations with Göteborgs Konsthall, Hasselblad Center, Röda Sten, Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA), Gothenburg’s House of Literature, Gothenburg’s poetry festival and many other cultural initiatives. We have an extensive international network and partners all over the world including EARN, SHARE, PARSE, SAR and a partnership with Bard CCS. The research at Valand Academy is rooted in the practical and critical nature of contemporary art, film, literature and photography with a particular focus on questions of the curatorial, narrative, poetics, environmental photography and art, and queer culture.
