The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified academics and professionals to apply for a faculty position as Assistant or Associate Professor (without tenure) in Art in Public Space and Critical Spatial Practice.
ADM is currently developing a teaching and research focus in Art in Public Space and Critical Spatial Practice, focusing on how art and artistic practices operate in, use, and relate to, different public spaces. Successful candidate should possess the professional skills and depth of knowledge required to engage students in developing and creating public art projects and to interact through artistic practice in diverse contexts outside of art institutions. This would typically involve the analysis and exploration of artistic practice, as well as reflection on reception within particular and diverse social settings. S/he should also have a clear vision of the existing challenges and the untapped potential associated with art in public spaces. S/he is expected to actively engage in research within this complex area.
The successful candidate will teach the domain of art in public space, and introduce new courses in existing area(s) of specialization. These might include: public arts administration, public space, the public realm and public art, exhibition and curatorial studies, art and technology, performance interaction and participation, and community and locality. Practicing artists, curators, architects and others with specialized knowledge of art and design and a keen interest in contemporary issues of urban, social, historical, aesthetic and technological cultures, alongside expertise in intervention, exhibition and public engagement, are encouraged to apply.
In October 2013, with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board, NTU established the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) as a national research centre. The successful candidate is expected to play a central role in driving the NTU CCA Singapore’s research agenda, which is focused on “Spaces of the Curatorial” and “Curating the City.”
Qualifications
A PhD degree (or other terminal degree/relevant experience), as well as a strong record of university level teaching, impactful research, curating, supervision and/or publishing, are preferred.
The school
ADM welcomes applications from candidates with international as well as regional expertise. The successful candidate should be able to engage students historically, socially, and conceptually and inspire imaginative, critical and interdisciplinary reflection across history, theory, and practice. ADM provides excellent opportunities for funded research and s/he is expected to maintain an active research profile, as well as a commitment to teaching and service at undergraduate and graduate levels. This position will also involve administrative duties and committee participation. The school currently offers six BFA degrees and an MA and PhD by research. ADM is a school under the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at NTU. ADM is collaborating with the CCA to develop new interdisciplinary programmes that include Public Art which will address the needs of Singapore and the region.
ADM is the first comprehensive art school in Singapore, providing a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, to develop students with the knowledge and skills, and produce groundbreaking creative artworks and related scholarly activity. ADM also promotes Singapore’s creative culture and identity, and is positioned to play a central role in the transformation of Singapore into a regional centre of art, art history, media and design.
Located in Gillman Barracks alongside a cluster of international galleries, NTU CCA Singapore takes a holistic approach towards art and culture, intertwining its three platforms: exhibitions, residencies, research & education. NTU CCA Singapore positions itself as a centre for critical discourse and experimental practices for Singapore, the region and beyond. It aims to play an active role within the local art scene, and to contribute to the development of regional and international art infrastructures.
