The Hunter College Department of Art and Art History is pleased to announce a public lecture by Yvonne Rainer as part of the fall 2015 Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Series. The lecutre will be held on Wednesday, November 11 at 6:30pm in Hunter’s Kaye Playhouse, located on East 68th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in Manhattan.
Yvonne Rainer made a transition to filmmaking following a 15-year career as a choreographer/dancer (1960–75). After making seven experimental feature films—including Lives of Performers (1972) and MURDER and murder (1996)—she returned to dance in 2000, with the work After Many a Summer Dies the Swan, commissioned by the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation. Since then, she has made six dances, including AG Indexical, with a little help from H.M., Assisted Living: Do you have any money?, and The Concept of Dust, or How do you look when there’s nothing left to move?. Retrospective exhibitions of her work have been presented at Kunsthaus Bregenz and Museum Ludwig, Cologne in 2012, and the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, and Raven Row, London, in 2014. Rainer’s memoir, Feelings Are Facts: a Life, was published by MIT Press in 2006. A selection of her poetry was published in 2011 by Paul Chan’s Badlands Unlimited.
About the Judith Zabar Visiting Artists Program
In November 2007, Hunter College received a generous commitment to establish the Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Program Fund. The Fund has allowed Hunter to bring a series of internationally recognized artists to campus to work directly with students in the MFA program, in master classes, critical seminars, and private tutorials, providing students with the unique opportunity to interact with top practitioners in the field. Zabar Visiting Artists also present public lectures where they discuss their work, engaging in conversation with members of Hunter’s faculty, Hunter’s broader student community, and the general public.
