The School of Art, Design and Architecture of Aalto University welcomes applications for the Nordic Visual studies and Art education (NoVA) Master’s degree programme. NoVA educates professionals and researchers to achieve understanding of the best Nordic practices and traditions in art education and visual communication, and to give relevant competencies and pedagogical interaction skills for working in cross-cultural and international educational situations and environments. NoVA builds on Nordic expertise and is open for international students.
Through courses on visual culture, social theory, pedagogy, and aesthetics in digital communications and games, for example, students investigate seeing and being seen. NoVA students explore how digital technologies affect perception and how vision is constructed. Students research visual events to understand the relationship between institutions, the media, society, and the economic sphere.
NoVA is a two-year masters program, with teaching provided by four Nordic universities & university colleges: Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture, Department of Art in Helsinki; Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Department of Visual Arts and Sloyd Education in Stockholm; Department of Art, Design and Drama at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Science in Oslo; and Aalborg University, Communication And Digital media, Department for Communication and Psychology in Copenhagen.
Competences between and among institutions offer a broad range of areas of study, including critical pedagogy and social and cultural awareness; contemporary art didactics, digital technology and ICT; project-oriented, collaborative, problem-based and participation-based work; sustainable development; and intercultural and social entrepreneurship, combining theory and practice. Each student studies in person at two universities through e-learning and contact teaching.
There are now three separate international master’s degree programmes open for applications in the Department of Art, in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture in the Aalto University for study years 2016–18:
–Nordic Visual Studies and Art Education (NoVA)
–Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA)
