DAI’s 2015–16 academic year will unfurl under the spell of SONSBEEK 2016, the continuation of a rich tradition of sculpture exhibitions in-and outside the now-public Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem, a lush former country estate erected in the 19th century by wealthy colonials, “active” in what they called the Dutch East Indies. The name of the exhibition’s most iconic edition (1971) still resonates: “Sonsbeek buiten de Perken” (“Sonsbeek beyond lawn and order”). Much to our excitement, Editon 2016 will be curated by Jakarta-based artist collective ruangrupa.
Arnhem
Ruangrupa have coined their Sonsbeek edition “TRANSACTION ARNHEM”.
We at DAI—roaming academy and spaceship with Arnhem as its monthly airstrip—decided that if “transaction” is to be understood as decolonial communication or exchange able to affect all parties involved equally, it should, from our part, physically extend to Jakarta as well. We are now realizing this ambition, in the bitter awareness that both Arnhem- and Jakarta-based artists, curators and art students belong to a privileged class: today’s global mobile happy few.
The ongoing question of how to make sense out of this privilege, particualrly in a time where the majority of the world’s population is denied the right to freely cross borders, will be an inherent part of our research.
Jakarta
Temporarily relocating DAI, managing staff, core tutorial team and all students travel to Indonesia and bring projects, workshops, seminars and student presentations to Jakarta (and beyond) during the first weeks of the Jakarta Biennale 2015: “Neither Forward nor Back: Acting in The Present,” which we will join for its opening, its four-day symposium, and two days of the MKMK Academy.
