Chicago’s Hyde Park Art Center is pleased to announce the artists who have been selected to participate in the 2016 Jackman Goldwasser Residency. Each year, the program provides a platform for international, national, and local artists to take creative risks within their practice and expand their professional networks. Launched in 2012, the program facilitates relationships between visiting artists and the city’s wealth of resources to develop individual practices and enrich the context for artmaking in Chicago.

International visiting artists include Paris-based artists Marie Cool & Fabio Balducci (February 15–April 11), a collaborative pair who present highly charged actions belied by their simple gestures and humble materials; Kolkata-based Suhasini Kejriwal (May 8–June 30), who builds spectacularly complex visions through mixed-media paintings and sculpture; Basim Magdy (July 9–August 26), from Cairo and based in Basel, whose video- and photo-based works examine war, information systems and the visual vocabulary of mass media; and Tintin Wulia (October 2–November 28), a conceptual artist based in Brisbane whose socio-politically charged works are often interactive and participatory.
Working alongside these visiting residents are Chicago-based artists Ayanah Moor, whose interdisciplinary practice, which incorporates individual action, collaborative and studio practice, mines the history of print media; Eric J. Garcia, who works between painting, sculpture and installation to create nuanced interpretations of political and historical events; and Sabina Ott, who will be developing a solo exhibition who cares for the sky (on view February 14–May 1), which will transform Hyde Park Art Center’s Gallery 1 into an interactive mountain landscape modeled after the metaphorical mountain present in Gertrude Stein’s only children’s book, The World is Round (1938).
Intersecting and engaging with resident artists are Milena Høgsberg (April 18–26), Chief Curator at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo, Norway, and Maria Arusoo (September 20–27), Director of Center for Contemporary Arts Estonia in Tallinn, Estonia, each of whom will make curatorial trips to Chicago to conduct studio visits, expand their ongoing research, and connect with the city.
