The University of Louisville’s Hite Art Institute is currently accepting applications for the Master’s Program in Art (Creative) with a concentration in Critical and Curatorial Studies (CCS).
The Graduate Program in Critical and Curatorial studies at the Hite Art Institute combines critical theory, contemporary art and exhibition history, and practical exhibition experience to prepare students for work in the expanding fields of contemporary exhibition development and art writing.
Students in the program benefit from the Hite Art Institute’s substantial resources, which include multiple galleries on campus and in downtown Louisville, extraordinary faculty, partnerships with local art museums and galleries, as well as an active speaker and colloquia schedule featuring internationally prominent curators, gallery directors, and artists. In addition, the independently endowed Hite Art Institute offers numerous scholarships and fellowships to assist CCS graduate students throughout their two years of study (or three years for the dual program in Fine Arts and Public Administration).
The graduate CCS program is headed by Professor Chris Reitz, the Hite Art Institute’s Gallery Director, and begins with a year-long methodologies seminar that introduces students to the theoretical and critical stakes of contemporary art and curatorial practice. The first year of the program culminates with a class-curated exhibition in the Institute’s campus galleries. In addition to the methodologies course and the Fine Arts graduate seminar, students in the CCS program take elective courses in Art History and other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences with the aim of developing general and specialized knowledge in their respective fields. Students’ professional learning includes a for-credit internship and an individualized thesis—a project that generally includes an independently curated exhibition. The CCS program’s blend of theoretical inquiry and hands on curatorial experience ensures that graduates are well equipped for critical, engaged work in contemporary art in its many valences.
