Designed especially for visual artists, curators, and creative thinkers, IDSVA offers a world-class, low-residency PhD in art theory and philosophy. The program combines fall/spring virtual classroom seminars with intensive summer residencies in Europe and the U.S. residency sites include Rome, Spannocchia Castle (Tuscany), Siena, Florence, Venice, Berlin, Aix-en-Provence, Athens, NYC, and Colby College (Maine).
IDSVA’s Visiting Faculty comprises renowned scholars and artists from around the world, including: Stephen Greenblatt (Harvard), Julie Mehretu (MacArthur Fellow), Bill Brown (University of Chicago), Jacqueline Rose (Birbeck Institute, London), Howard Caygill (Paris VIII), Peggy Phelan (Stanford), Fred Wilson (MacArthur Fellow), Hal Foster (Artforum/Princeton), Sylvère Lotringer (Semiotext(e)), Susan Stewart (Princeton), David Driskell (Driskell Center for the Study of the Arts and Culture of African Americans), Holly Block (American Commissioner, 2013 Venice Biennale), and John Rajchman (Columbia).
Founded in 2006, IDSVA received accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, November 20, 2015.
