The fifth edition of the Royal Institute of Art’s Research Week spans a multitude of perspectives and approaches in order to reflect the institution’s commitment to the widest interpretation of research with respect to art production, extending through the BA, MA and PhD levels as well as faculty members’ research activities.
The 2016 Research Week presents an unparalleled programme of student, faculty and researchers’ presentations as well as international speakers and institutional collaborations forming connections between artistic practice, architecture, critical studies, philosophy and society at large. All in all reflecting the impetus of RIA’s research platform. The ambition is to allow ideas yet undisclosed or embedded within the institution to be formulated as public lectures and discussions with fellow colleagues and the public at large.
The conference Useless Uses serves as a preamble to this year’s Research Week. Specifically considering “use” and “usefulness” in relation to art’s social function, conditions of criticality and discourses today, the conference operates as a makeshift thematic strand within the wider programme. Developed in close cooperation with the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP), Kingston University London, the conference is an extension of the RIA course Philosophy in the Context of Art, whose students will also present their own work during the week.
Overall, Research Week 2016 encompasses 40 scheduled events on wide-ranging topics, resulting in a diversity of presentations, lectures, performances, film screenings, student and research project exhibitions, as well as the RIA open house. Students of the Critical Habitats course will present as part of a full-day cluster relating to architecture including many other speakers. The constellation of practice and thought of Research Week bridges practical, transdisciplinary, theoretical and philosophical aspects of contemporary art and architecture with particular interests; and brings to the fore the continuously evolving nature of “research” as a necessarily open category.
