Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon
December 12, 2015–February 3, 2016
Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon presents major works by 11 artists from Southeast Asia and France: Aung Ko, Hicham Berrada, Ade Darmawan, Marguerite Humeau, Dusadee Huntrakul, Emmanuelle Lainé, Lou Lim, Oanh Phi Phi, Vivien Roubaud, Yee I-Lann and Raphaël Zarka. Substantial and immersive, the works use complex combinations of materials and techniques to create unexpected aesthetic experiences.
The exhibition is conceived as an encounter between art and artists from opposite sides of the world. Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon highlights the personal creative process of each artist, their unique influences and innovative approach to materials, contemporary subjects and ideas. The exhibition reflects the all-encompassing character of exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo, which are renowned for their spectacular manipulations of space, light, sound and form and their emphasis on audience interaction. Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon is part of Palais de Tokyo’s programme supporting emerging artists from France and Southeast Asia.
On January 20, we will present three live offerings by Paris-based artists Hicham Berrada, Marie-Luce Nadal, and Raphaël Zarka. Titled Performing the Moon, the evening event includes chemical experiments and visual projections by Berrada, accompanied by invited artist Mark Wong’s sound, and international professional skateboarders’ demonstrations with sculptures by Zarka.
Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon is curated by Khairuddin Hori, Deputy Director of Artistic Programming at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris). The exhibition is co-produced by the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore and Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
Sous la Lune/Beneath the Moon is presented under the aegis of the Emerging Talents from Emerging Countries programme initiated by the Total Corporate Foundation and Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
Ana Prvački: Finding Comfort in an Uncomfortable Imagination
December 12, 2015–February 3, 2016
Los Angeles-based artist Ana Prvački is a specialist in etiquette, eroticism and hospitality. She has developed drawings, sculptures, participatory projects, short films and publications documenting her ideas and experiments since 2005, when she started her company, Ananatural Production. In many works, Prvački takes on the role of “service provider,” offering imaginative responses to ameliorating ‘problem’ feelings such as unease or anxiety.
For her first major solo exhibition in Singapore, Prvački empties the gallery, presenting a sparsely furnished reading room for her new 136-page full-colour book of ideas, concepts and protocols. The book contains reflections and essays by curators Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Raimundas Malašauskas, Chus Martínez, and Bala Starr.
Along with the book, Prvački’s exhibition presents a series of simple postures designed to eliminate common physical afflictions arising from overuse, such as stiff neck and tennis elbow. The gallery becomes a space for rejuvenating the body and mind through reading.
