Media Design Practices (MDP) at Art Center College of Design announces a call for proposals for the MDP Design Residency Summer 2016. We are looking for projects that use design as a mode of inquiry into emerging issues in science, technology, culture, and/or society. The winning proposal will be selected by a distinguished jury that includes:
Natalie Jeremijenko, socio-ecological systems designer and director of the Environmental Health Clinic at NYU
Rosten Woo, grassroots artist, designer, and co-founder of the Center for Urban Pedagogy
Dr. Rhazes Spell, media artist and former biomedical engineer
Tim Durfee, architect and MDP Faculty
The MDP Design Residency
The MDP calls for designers, filmmakers, architects, artists, hardware sketchers and software developers to submit proposals for design-driven research projects to be conducted in summer 2016 in residence in the MDP studio. Past residents have included m-a-u-s-e-r, Nicholas Nova, Ilona Gaynor, and Sascha Pohflepp, whose projects have been exhibited and published widely, most recently at the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennial and the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
The selected resident/s will be awarded project space, a 5,000 USD stipend, a 5,000 USD project budget, access to Art Center’s state-of-the-art shops and facilities, and a small team of Media Design graduate students for seven weeks. The residency concludes with a small exhibition and public presentation.
Housed in a former supersonic jet testing facility, the MDP studio is part of the Wind Tunnel Graduate Center for Critical Practice, which includes the Wind Tunnel Gallery, the Graduate Art studios and galleries, and the Hixon Courtyard, in the heart of Art Center’s south campus in Pasadena, California.

About Media Design Practices
The Media Design Practices MFA seeks designers who are up for the challenge of the unknown. Our program’s award-winning curriculum prepares graduates to tackle the urgent issues of our time. Through project-based coursework and external partnerships, students ask and answer: What is the role of design in complex global systems? How can design influence the development of emerging technologies? How might design affect change where it is needed most? How can designers address hard and fast realities by imagining alternative futures?
The program’s award-winning curriculum features two intentionally divergent tracks called Lab and Field. Lab track students use design to explore the cultural impact of new ideas from science, technology, and culture. Field track students use design to tackle social issues in a global context. The productive friction between the tracks leads to new ideas and approaches, as students take on complex issues from a mix of critical perspectives.
