The Institute of Contemporary Arts/University of Kent joint MA in the Contemporary is accepting applications for autumn 2016 entry. This full-time Master of Arts programme provides a deep understanding of the relationship between artistic disciplines and an appreciation of the way in which interdisciplinary thinking makes it possible to grasp and respond to key issues across contemporary culture. Students will attend seminars in Canterbury and London, with an option to spend a semester in Paris.
MA taught seminars, group projects and independent research reflect all the elements of the productive partnership between the ICA and the University of Kent. At the ICA, students have unique access to the knowledge of ICA Curators teaching on the core Reading the Contemporary module and gain insight into the workings of the institution through student placements and the opportunity to work on a public project at the ICA. At the University of Kent, students will be able to choose from a wide variety of modules in the areas of contemporary practice including Literature, Creative Writing, Film, Drama and History, and Philosophy of Art.
Following a similar structure to the MA in the Contemporary, the Paris programme allows students to spend their first term at the Kent Canterbury campus, whilst participating in the collaborative module taught partly at the ICA in London, before relocating to our Paris Centre in the heart of historic Montparnasse for the spring term. Students will be able to choose from a wide variety of modules in the areas of Contemporary Literature, Creative Writing, Film, Drama and History, and Philosophy of Art. Whilst at the Paris Centre, students are offered a range of modules inspired by Paris and its unique cultural history. The ICA will coordinate a two-day study visit to Paris which, in partnership with key galleries and artists, which will contextualise contemporary culture in an international setting.
Students in both programmes will have the opportunity to:
–Attend an induction at the ICA at the start of their studies to introduce them to the facilities, along with a group visit and discussion of contemporary exhibitions in London.
–Engage with the ICA’s rich programme of seminars and events.
–Receive free ICA membership and an ICA reading list.
–Develop a group project to be included in the ICA public programme.
This pioneering educational opportunity will equip students with the skills, knowledge, and professional experience to progress into areas such as artistic practice, related higher postgraduate research, arts management and policy, and a variety of other careers within the arts.
