La Casa Encendida of Fundacion Montemadrid is pleased to present, for the first time in Spain, a solo exhibition featuring the work of American artists Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin. Their collaborative practice—which includes video, sculpture and installation—is marked by its exploration of the effects of technology and Web 2.0 media on the changing nature of subjectivity, identity, and language. The large-scale multi-room “sculptural theater” Priority Innfield is an “alternatingly gloomy and hopeful foray into the conceptual minefield of success, complicity, path dependency, personal history and even the nature of historical causation.” (Chris Glazek)
Lizzie Fitch/Ryan Trecartin: Priority Innfield was originally created for the 55th International Art Exhibition, Il Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace), curated by Massimiliano Gioni and organised by the Biennale di Venezia. This touring exhibition is organised in collaboration with Zabludowicz Collection, courtesy Tamares Real Estate Holdings Inc.
The exhibition is comprised of four movies—including Junior War, CENTER JENNY, Item Falls and Comma Boat—four pavilions that serve as viewing areas in which the videos are screened, and an observational platform. The installation invokes the mise-en-scène of everyday life, allowing the viewer’s response to the work to merge with one’s own lived experience and resulting in an uncannily familiar, yet discomfiting, sculptural container. Employing Google’s open-source 3D modelling program Sketchup to design the movie sets and pavilions, the artists remixed various sculptural forms and structures inspired by common types of domestic and institutional spaces—such as high school stadiums, public parks, pools, bathrooms and patios—creating environments that collapse distinctions between interior and exterior, public and private, audience and performer.
To further transform select galleries at La Casa Encendida, the installation will extend from floor to ceiling using carpeting and other materials, ushering visitors into a contained environment suggestive of shifting states of experience and perception.
About the artists
Ryan Trecartin (b. Webster, Texas, 1981) and Lizzie Fitch (b. Bloomington, Indiana, 1981) received BFAs from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004 and currently live in Los Angeles. Their collaboration has endured over 15 years producing works that have been shown at contemporary art centres and museums around the world, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; MoMA PS1, New York; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Francois Pinault Foundation at the Punta della Dogana, Venice.
