Royal Institute of Art/Kungl. Konsthögskolan (RIA) in Stockholm calls for applications for two international doctoral positions in visual arts and/or within the practice of architecture, urban planning, and social justice to commence as of September 2016. The 100% practice-based doctoral studies at RIA consist of independent artistic research for the duration of four academic years. The main focus is the realisation of a documented artistic research project, a PhD award unique to Sweden. The remaining credits correspond to obligatory and elective course components. The PhD studies are undertaken in the form of funded full-time employment with some added teaching engagement. RIA’s current PhD candidates include Emanuel Almborg, Ana Džokić, Melanie Gilligan, Simon Goldin and Olivia Plender.

A position in the doctoral programme entails developing a practice-based artistic research project, in dialogue with supervisors. The research study should contribute to developing new perspectives and deepening and challenging existing practices within the field of the visual arts and architecture. Applicants will apply with a project proposal originating from their artistic practice and its related research questions, and which demonstrates the project’s relation to existing discourses and practices within the field of visual arts and architecture. Furthermore, a reflected position on the relationship between (natural) language (as the standard medium of institutionalised representation and communication) and artistic/architectural formulations as forms of embodiment is expected. The project as well as the practice-based research process should be critically and contextually reflected upon and eventually documented in its relevant presentation format.

The two PhD positions are announced in partnership with Lund University, which acts as the host for the formal registration.

Entry requirements
An advanced level degree or completed courses corresponding to at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS must be from advanced level studies in a relevant area of the arts. Alternatively, accredited prior learning experience of work within the arts that corresponds to the education cited above.
