Rupert is now accepting applications for its alternative education and residency programs. Rupert’s Alternative Education program aims to combine self-directed education, interdisciplinary exchange and professional development. It is a resource aimed at creating opportunities for exchange between thinkers and producers based in different parts of the world and facilitating the production of various individual projects including artworks, exhibitions, publications and institutions. The program consists of regular lectures, workshops, events and studio visits with local and international guests (among which Claire Bishop, Sebastian Cichocki, Dora Garcia, Adam Kleinman, Raimundas Malašauskas, Fionn Meade, Dan and Lia Perjovschi, Kristupas Sabolius, Mårten Spångberg and Julijonas Urbonas have participated in the past) and self-initiated activities such as reading groups, workshops and trips.
In addition to its own programmed activities, the alternative education program is informed by the presence of the 40 or so artists, writers, curators, academics and other creative researchers that join Rupert’s Exhibitions, Residencies and Public Programs each year. Lastly, the program consists of a final presentation of completed projects—an exhibition, workshop or weeklong lab—hosted both at Rupert and at partner organisations abroad. Previous participants have travelled to Studio-X in New York, Komplot in Brussels and Warsaw Bauhaus in Poland.
Guests for the fourth edition (2016) includeLiudvikas Buklys, Travis Jeppesen, Justė Jonutytė, Valentinas Klimašauskas, Augustas Serapinas, Joshua Simon, Maya Tounta, Marina Vishmidt and Jonas Žakaitis, who will host talks, workshops, events or trips that are yet to take form.

Rupert’s residency program is suited for local and international thinkers: artists, writers, curators, cultural managers and academics, providing them with the opportunity to live and work in Vilnius while developing individual projects and immersing themselves in the region’s creative sphere. Run alongside Rupert’s educational, exhibitions and public programs, it also enables residents to benefit from collaboration with these programs that draw participants and mentors from a wide range of complementary artistic backgrounds, as well as attend talks, lectures and workshops by prominent curators, artists and thinkers from all over the world.
Located in the picturesque area of Valakampiai in Vilnius and only a short distance from the city’s flourishing cultural center, Rupert is set by the river Neris and a small river beach, surrounded by peaceful fields and a forest. The residencies are located in a newly constructed building designed by award-winning Lithuanian architect Audrius Ambrasas, operating as an arts incubator which houses a number of creative industries initiatives. Each resident is provided with a fully furnished studio space and mezzanine (approximately 52 square meters) to be used as a production and research space during the residency.

Rupert’s Alternative Education program is free. Personal accommodation and production expenses must be covered independently.
Residency program fee is 450 euros a month, however, at least half of all residencies will be fully funded by residency grants from Lithuanian Council for Culture and other sources. Residents are responsible for covering personal and travel expenses, but some stipends are provided, courtesy of the Lithuanian Council for Culture residency grant and other sources.
