The Aspen Institute Artist-Endowed Foundations Initiative (AEFI), recognized globally for its pioneering research on private foundations endowed by visual artists, announces the launch of a groundbreaking professional development program—the Seminar on Strategy for New Artist-Endowed Foundation Leaders. The program responds to the demand for professional development opportunities among new leaders entering this fast-growing field, which has seen the value of its assets double in the past five years.
Presented in collaboration with University of Miami School of Law, the annual Seminar is designed to support the professional development of individuals who currently have, or soon will have, new policy-setting and leadership responsibilities for artist-endowed foundations—directors, officers, trustees, board members, and senior staff. The Seminar orients new leaders to the characteristics of these distinctive organizations, including foundations’ complex business models, diverse philanthropic practices, influential art historical roles, and manifold governance and stewardship requirements.
The 2016 Seminar will take place the week of June 6–10 in New York City. In a novel approach that provides an educational setting to enhance the curriculum, the Dedalus Foundation, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, and Richard Avedon Foundation will each host one day of the Seminar, offering participants a firsthand view of established foundations’ operations.
The Seminar’s curriculum is based on findings of AEFI’s National Study of Artist-Endowed Foundations and subsequent research publications and focuses specifically on the strategic concerns of leaders entering the field. Sessions with seasoned foundation leaders and other practitioners and scholars are central to the curriculum. By building the capacity of new leaders, the Seminar advances AEFI’s mission to strengthen the charitable impact of the emerging artist-endowed foundation field.

Initiated in 2007, the Aspen Institute Artist-Endowed Foundations Initiative (AEFI) develops and disseminates knowledge in order to strengthen the charitable impact of the emerging artist-endowed foundation field as a force in cultural philanthropy and art stewardship.
