The 2016 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts recipient will address 21st century challenges in public architecture and planning during his residency on campus.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with renowned architect David Adjaye OBE will host three public panel discussions on the Future of the Library, Campus, and Museum at MIT this winter and spring that focus on architectural design in relation to cultural experience in the digital era. The panel discussions strengthen the Institute’s commitment to the aesthetic, human, and social dimensions of research and innovation, and are organized as part of Adjaye’s residency on campus in conjunction with the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT, of which he is the 2016 recipient.
One of the most prestigious arts honors in the U.S., the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT includes a 100,000 USD cash prize, campus residency, and honorary gala that convenes national and international leaders in the arts. Shaped to provide the recipient with unparalleled access to the creative energy and cutting-edge research at the Institute and to develop mutually enlightening relationships with the MIT community, the award residency encompasses a public presentation of the artist’s work and substantial interaction with students, faculty, and researchers from across the Institute’s diverse schools and disciplines.
David Adjaye OBE is the founder of Adjaye Associates and is recognized as a leading architect of his generation. His influences range from contemporary art, music, and science to African art forms and the civic life of cities. “I have always believed that the cross-fertilization of ideas emerging from disparate fields can stimulate innovation and creativity,” he said. “What impresses me about MIT is its porous and multi-disciplinary environment that fosters uncommon approaches to problem-solving and art-making. I am excited and honored to begin this relationship with MIT and to participate in these discussions, which I hope contribute to new ways of thinking across our creative communities and expand horizons in my own work as well.”
