The Academy of Fine Art in Oslo is proud to present its upcoming Academy Lectures programme. Among the speakers are Rike Frank, Dora García, Emily Jacir, Bouchra Khalili, Maria Lind, Apolonija Šušteršič, Anne Szefer Karlsen and Tirdad Zolghadr.
This lecture series aims to raise awareness for the positions we speak from as differently constituted and empowered subjects, as well as to challenge our historically grown and geographically specific notions of location. It brings together professors from different departments at Oslo National Academy of the Arts together with professors of its main partner institution, the International Academy of Art Palestine, as well as partner institutions in Scandinavia.
By talking about their respective work, these artists, writers and curators will share a conversation with each other on the subject of location. As cultural practitioners, they are deeply committed to the places and people they engage with, and though their forms of engagement is manifold, they all share an awareness of location as a central constitutive term.
In their artistic and curatorial work as well as their writing, the speakers engage with the social and political realities surrounding them, often entering into conversations with the local communities. They inquire into the specific economic, infrastructural or historical backgrounds of these locations, sharing concerns across generations, cultures and belief systems.
By getting enmeshed in the contexts surrounding the art institution and sharing concerns with the local community, Maria Lind politicizes the curatorial space. Apolonija Šušteršič investigates urban environments, while Bouchra Khalili explores migratory existence and the convergence of international resistance movements in the “capital of the revolutionaries,” Algiers. This subject also touches upon Anne Szefer Karlsen’s interest in collaborative practices and the languages sustaining these. Emily Jacir’s work deals with experiences of exile while Dora García is interested in communities in the periphery of our rationalizing society. Slohagenhallah, a collaboration between three art academies from Copenhagen, Oslo and Ramallah, will be a point of departure for Rike Frank and Tirdad Zolghadr’s conversation from which to look at the genre of the student exhibition.

Bouchra Khalili, professor of contemporary art at the Academy of Fine Art/Oslo National Academy of the Arts, will be in conversation with Anne Szefer Karlsen, associate professor of curatorial studies at Bergen Academy of Art and Design.
May 18
Rike Frank, associate professor of exhibition practice at the Academy of Fine Art/Oslo National Academy of the Arts, will be in conversation with Tirdad Zolghadr, lecturer at the International Academy of Art Palestine.
May 25
Maria Lind, professor of artistic research at the Academy of Fine Art/Oslo National Academy of the Arts, will be in conversation with Apolonija Šušteršič, professor of art in public space at the department of Art and Craft/Oslo National Academy of the Arts.
Autumn
Dora García, professor of contemporary art at the Academy of Fine Art/Oslo National Academy of the Arts, will be in conversation with Emily Jacir, lecturer at the International Academy of Art Palestine.
