The Postgraduate Programme at Edinburgh College of Art has established a particular place in the recent history of art, as a supportive yet critical environment in which to develop a distinctive practice.
The programme is focused on supporting students working in a post media framework, whose work responds to, and utilizes the technical and conceptual changes brought about by the digital revolution. Students work in a wide range of media—painting, performance, sculpture, installation, audio, video and 3D animation and are encouraged to develop critical, ambitious bodies of work that fully explore the challenges faced in responding to the complexity of contemporary digital culture and society.
Staff on the programme share these research interests, and similarly work in a multi-disciplined range of practices. The ethos of the programme is for students and staff to work collaboratively to produce a culture that encourages experimentation and risk, supports the interconnectedness of research and practice and the need for praxis in addressing the challenges of making contemporary art in 2016.
The Masters programme functions within a dynamic art school, where the focus is on building a supportive creative community. As well as pursuing and developing their own independent research, our students often work in groups as part of the programme, and we are keen to select applicants based on their ability to work well as part of a creative team. Edinburgh College of Art, and the School of Art, are located within the University of Edinburgh, and students on the MFA, and MA are encouraged to take courses from across the wider University and become involved within cross-disciplinary projects. This emphasis on collaborative practice and innovative teaching practices has led in recent years to MFA and MA graduates being selected for major residencies, exhibitions and prizes such as Bloomberg New Contemporaries, Saatchi New Sensations and Edinburgh International Art Festival.
Faculty
There is a well-developed, reciprocal relationship between the School of Art and Scotland’s contemporary artists, national organisations, national museums, galleries, studios, workshops and publishers. Students benefit directly from our partners’ teaching and research input into their work, as well as from the considerable resources and experience they offer. For example first year students have the opportunity to work on projects at the Talbot Rice Gallery and the Embassy Gallery. The School of Art invites prominent artists, critics and curators to deliver our Friday Talks
Permanent Faculty includes a mixture of practicing artists, critics, visual culture scholars and curators. Many members of staff combine two or more of these roles bringing an exceptional diversity of expertise and experience to our postgraduate programmes. Current faculty include:
John Beagles (Programme Director), Torsten Lauschmann, Kristin Mojsiewicz, Rachel Maclean, Maria Fusco, Andrew Sneddon, Ruth Pelzer, Susannah Thompson, Keith Farquhar, Deborah Jackson and Angela McClanahan.
