Applications are invited for those wishing to pursue higher education in Exhibition Studies this coming academic year, 2015–16.
The MRes Art: Exhibition Studies course is a postgraduate research programme that approaches the history of modern and contemporary art from the perspective of the public exhibition in all its myriad forms. The curriculum is internationally focused and begins in the 1950s, though you are welcome to extend your interests beyond this date. The two-year course is taught in extended full-time mode, with classes gathered at the beginning of the week. You will be provided with rigorous academic training and a supportive environment in which to develop your own historical and theoretical research.
The application process has a rolling deadline but places are limited and we advise you to apply soon. Early applicants will qualify for grants. Vice Chancellor UK scholarships cover 50% of fees each year and there are six Trask Bursaries worth 2,000 GBP.
While the MRes provides ideal training for those contemplating doctoral work in the field of Exhibition Studies, we also welcome applications from those already qualified in related fields. The MPhil/PhD application deadline is April 11.
Exhibition Studies is taught in association with the editorial team for the Exhibition Histories project of Afterall research and publishing, based at Central Saint Martins. The MRes Art: Exhibition Studies course is led by Yaiza Hernández and Lucy Steeds, with the core participation of Charles Esche. Visiting lecturers are invited in response to students’ interests and have included Martin Beck, Claire Bishop, Roger Buergel, Eddie Chambers, Céline Condorelli, Clémentine Deliss, Hou Hanru, Antony Hudek, Mary Jane Jacob, Jakob Jakobsen, Lisette Lagnado, Filipa Ramos, Laurence Rassel and Marina Vishmidt.
All postgraduate students participate in the activities of the Exhibitions: Histories, Practices research group at Central Saint Martins and are based at the college’s new campus at King’s Cross, in central London. They have privileged access to all Afterall events and to the Exhibition Histories resources as developed in conjunction with the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. Central Saint Martins is part of the University of the Arts London, which ranks among the top research universities with more than 80% of its research graded as world leading and internationally excellent (UK Research Excellence Framework 2014).
