The School of Visual Arts is pleased to present five interdisciplinary summer intensives in critical studies, providing artists, writers and designers opportunities to explore the intersection of theory and practice within their fields. Key practitioners, scholars, critics and historians engage participants through lectures, workshops and studio visits designed to provide an intellectually driven, humanistic experience of art and design to makers and thinkers alike.

Summer 2016 residencies in Critical Studies:

Art Writing Summer Intensive
This intensive seminar is open to artists, writers and other arts professionals who seek to expand their art writing and critical thinking skills. Part creative writing, part scholarly investigation, art writing is an ever-evolving field in which philosophy, poetry, art history and, at times, fiction, coalesce into a lively and lucid form of writing. Participants will engage with works of art not only as isolated phenomena, but also as occasions for prying open and delving into visual culture at large.

Design Writing and Research Summer Intensive
Led by SVA’s MA Design Writing and Research Department, this intensive introduces participants to a range of techniques for constructing compelling narratives about images, objects, and spaces. Participants experiment with different research methods and writing formats, and complete several projects across media, including a collaboratively produced publication. In addition to the unique opportunity to study closely with leading writers, editors, curators, and researchers, a robust daily schedule of seminars, lectures, workshops, and one-on-one consultations, will be supplemented with visits to the city’s design collections, archives, libraries, design and architecture studios, and behind-the-scenes access to new exhibitions, buildings, and urban planning developments.

Typography as Language: Theory and Practice
As a critical component of the creative process, typography both mirrors and shapes our visual culture, forming a place where design, technology, culture, emotion and commerce intersect. Designers, across all media, rely upon the powerful language of typography in pursuit of eloquence in their work. This four-week summer intensive in type design provides theoretical background and practical experience for designers at all career levels seeking to create compelling narratives through typography, with a wide-ranging focus on type’s contribution to contemporary storytelling.

Un-Disciplined: Residency in Contemporary Practices
Presented in partnership with SVA’s MFA Fine Arts Department, the focus of this residency is on content and critical discourse. Work in a variety of media is supported and encouraged, including drawing, painting, photography, performance, installation, digital and interactive media, electronics, sound and all modes of experimental practice. Residents are invited to consider the socio-political potentiality of art practices situated outside the paradigm of individual authorship.

Visual Literacy in the Realm of the Circuit
Reading and writing alone no longer define 21st century literacy in a world where image, data and language are intertwined and of equal importance. SVA’s MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department presents an intensive summer forum for rethinking what constitutes literacy in our time. Over the course of the program, participants will engage in intensive workshops and presentation by leaders in the fields of visual culture, social media, education, art, science and history, understanding and re-imagining new possibilities for teaching, learning and expression through images and the technologies of image-making.

SVA’s Summer Residencies in New York City offer artists, designers and creative thinkers time, space and a supportive community in which to develop ideas and focus on their artistic direction. In addition to our time-honored studio residencies, a variety of innovative professional immersion programs provide opportunities for artists to explore new areas of social and technological practice and engage critically within their field. SVA’s state-of-the-art facilities offer a wealth of tools for innovation in art and design. A unique combination of creative and professional resources provides a rich environment for growth and opportunity in the current, vibrant art scene.
