Transart Triennale 2016 continues this August in Berlin with a three-day event featuring exhibitions, performance series, food and movement labs, music, dance, film and video series and a symposium on the theme “The Imperceptible Self.”

2016 London Biennale Manila Pollination – Synchronisations – Syncopations
As part of the Transart Triennale, the 2016LBMP team, led by Josephine Turalba, is seeking submissions of videos that explore built, temporary, and imagined architecture for understanding shared histories, culture and inter-connectedness, within a framework of “The Imperceptible Self.” Spurring dialogues on syncopations of the permanent and synchronisations of the displaced through built and imaginary structures, artists engage the borrowed concepts of adaptive re-use, sustainability, and repurposing from architectural frameworks vis-à-vis contemporary existences, otherness, the collective, individual and hybrid identities.
The 2016LBMP extends from the energies of London Biennale, founded in 1998 by David Medalla, an internationally-acclaimed Filipino conceptual artist based in London, which aims “to challenge and transform the notion of the art world ‘biennale’ as a large state or corporate-sponsored event…by throwing open borders and encouraging a more intimate and community-based dialogue between the artists and audiences.”

Iconographic Dictionary on Collective and Collaborative Artistic Practices

The aim of this project is to wonder what are the shapes, formats, content, tactics and aesthetics of collective and collaborative artistic practices. The nature of the projects gathered by this dictionary is open. What we are interested in portraying is, precisely, the variety of frameworks enveloping collective and collaborative artistic processes. Given that we are talking about approaches to art production rather than objects, the challenge lies, then, in identifying the forms these processes manifest into; their resonances. What stays from these “trading zones” where new modes of trust and knowledge are built and exchanged between the various social actors conveying in these temporary joint creative spaces? Are there formats, patterns or shapes that permeate all this immaterial landscape of encounters, relationships, in between-ness, negotiations, conflicts and consensus?

Two new scholarships for incoming MFA students:
Klaus Knoll Writing Scholarships
In honor of Transart co-founder and exceptional writer Klaus Knoll, Transart is offering four new scholarships for incoming MFA students who work predominantly with creative writing or for whom writing forms an integral part of their creative practice. Award is 4,000 USD (1,000 per semester).
New Media Art Scholarships
Two new scholarships in New Media Art are available for students working at the intersection of new technologies and contemporary art. Award is 4,000 USD (1,000 per semester).
Deadline extended for the “Imperceptible Self” Scholarship for Social Practice open to artists and curators
In connection with the three-year Transart Triennale research projects, Transart Institute is pleased to announce two new scholarships for candidates with a demonstrated history of working with Socially Engaged Practices and whose project proposal for the MFA program would follow this trajectory. Proposed projects will resonate with Transart research areas: Identity; Exile; Role of Art in Peace and Mediation; Space In Between; International Diaspora, Post-Nationalism and Post-Colonialism; Home; Temporary Architecture; Cultural Engagement through Food; Foreignness, Otherness and the Uncanny; or Publicness, Collaboration and the Social and this current triennale theme, The Imperceptible Self.

About Transart Institute
We began as an independent, utopian, post-national and transdisciplinary “unschool art school,” embodying the idea that participation in a vibrant and current graduate experience requires nomadic possibilities untethered to geography. The focus and strength of Transart has centered on an exceptional international teaching, research and learning program that leads to an MFA or PhD in creative, curatorial and transcultural practices. Adopting a respiratory model of meeting and dispersing, Transart positions itself in the gaps where art practice, knowledge production and research processes operate; in the tensions between, across, through and beyond recognised paradigms. Encouraging active student-driven learning over passive educational models, our students and faculty—from all over the planet—meet bi-annually as we continue to work wherever we live, actively supported by the Transart community.
We believe that education is most relevant, effective and powerful when vitally connected to projects and initiatives in the world—beyond the walls of the academy. By its very nature, Transart creates international research communities that encourage and promote dialogue and collaboration between artists, writers, curators and thinkers across cultures. Driven by our students desires rather than the demands of bureaucracy and real estate we remain agile, responsive and nomadic; currently meeting in Berlin and New York with plans afoot to include Mexico City and Melbourne.
After ten years of remarkable development we are now entering the next phase in our evolution. The “transartist” vision is continually amplified by a growing global network of artists, curators and creative thinkers working collectively in hybrid ways that span engaged sites and interactive online spaces from Brazil to Australia, Ethiopia to Canada, Pakistan to Iceland. These reverberating actions further stimulate emergent streams of public programming and events such as the Transart Triennale, ELSE Journal and NEST (New Experiments for Sharing Terrain) and drive our educational curiosity even further. This exciting moment finds Transart again at the cutting edge of what schools, arts institutions, communities and broader cultural experiences might be in the twenty-first century. Transart Institute was founded by two artists and remains operated entirely by artists.
