Aesthetic practices intrinsically determine the formation of identity and the concept of value in a society and its development. Apart from successfully promoting a next generation of artists and designers, the FHNW Academy of Art and Design stands as a significant cultural site and research institution, effectively contributing to the advancement of art, design and media, which today play such a prominent role in society.
In the context of this year’s Art Basel, the symposium Poetry of the Real: Conversations on Arts Research presents a programme focused on negotiating the perspective of the new—intrinsic to an academy of art. The FHNW Academy of Art and Design shed light on the development of new aesthetic practices and the emergence of a new generation of aesthetic thought and action.
Poetry of the Real refers to the creative-artistic work that emerges from the encounter with lived reality, sounding its range and viability by means of experimental approaches. Characteristic of this strategy is a generation of creative-artistic composit knowledge and artefacts that develop impact through the collective, negotiable expression of sensuous experience, thus conveying a new form of aesthetic bearing. By applying such a research approach, the arts meet the demands of knowledge-oriented work in its own right.
The symposium Poetry of the Real: Conversations on Arts Research reviews and negotiates under what conditions and in what way art and design can generate knowledge that is of relevance for society. Renowned speakers and representatives from the arts, anthropology, art history and cultural studies come together to critically reflect on the field of discourse relating to research in the arts.
They include, among others, Corina Caduff (literary critic, cultural scholar and author, Zurich), Francesco Erspamer (Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Harvard University), Susanna Hertrich (multi-disciplinary artist working at the intersection of art, design and technology, Berlin and Basel), Mikhail Karikis (Greek/British artist, London), Pierluigi Sacco (Professor of Cultural Economics and Head of International Relations at IULM University of Milan), Bernd Scherer (Director, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin), and Maxa Zoller (film curator (i.e. Art Basel) and art lecturer, Cairo).
Further participants to be announced.
