Mediterranean Sea is an exhibition of Rabih Mroué’s work. It will bring both old and new pieces by this major Lebanese artist to La Kunsthalle Mulhouse. As a visual artist, performer, theatre director, and actor, Rabih Mroué is an artist who relates to the world through creation, regardless of genre. His work is a unique point of view on current issues in the Middle East presented with strength and sincerity.
Rabih Mroué fixes his attention wherever life and events take him, but never far from his native country or surroundings. Both as a participant in his family history, rich with humorous and sad episodes, or as the witness of a complex and painful geopolitical situation, his work always demonstrates a personal engagement, whether physical or moral. By returning to the images and words linked with the Middle East and abundantly published by the media, and re-injecting them into his films and photographs, he encourages the viewer to look differently, and to feel involved in his art. His work reminds us how important it is to feel involved in the reality of current affairs even if, in our daily lives, the facts some state and others hear seem disordered, and often slip into the trap of banality or are forgotten. With Rabih Mroué, these same facts take on new life through artworks which place information and the importance of responsibility side by side. Contemporary history concerns us as much as it concerns him.
