VoCA and the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s CALL (Creating a Living Legacy) program are pleased to announce the first event in the second year of our on-going CALL/VoCA Talks series. On Thursday, September 29, artist Blane De St. Croix will sit down with VoCA Board Member Robin Clark to discuss how his work engages topics including the geopolitical landscape, border issues, climate change, pollution, land erosion, and preservation. The event will be held at 7pm at Cabinet, located at 300 Nevins Street in Brooklyn. Space will be limited, so we ask that you please RSVP in advance to [email protected].
Blane De St. Croix is a sculptor who works with geopolitical landscapes that serve as flashpoints for discussion about the far-reaching social implications of climate change and contested borders. His collaborative, research-based practice bridges the fields of visual art, cultural geography and environmental activism; aesthetics and social justice are given equal weight in his work. Recent projects have taken De St. Croix to the Svalbard Archipelago, the Gobi Desert, the Mexican-American border, and the wetlands surrounding New Orleans. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Kathmandu International Triennial, Nepal; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; Gasworks Gallery, London; Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City; The Asia Society, Houston; and his gallery, Fredericks & Freiser, New York.
In 2015, VoCA partnered with the Joan Mitchell Foundation‘s Creating a Living Legacy (CALL) program to put forward a series of Talks that focus on the diverse practices of the featured artists, highlighting the innovative CALL initiative while also underscoring the importance of speaking with artists to document the production, presentation, and preservation of their work. Thus far, VoCA has produced public programs with CALL artists Arlan Huang, Juan Sanchez, Mimi Smith, and the late Jaime Davidovich. Blane De St. Croix is the first in a new group of artists to take part in the CALL/VoCA Talks this fall; the next event, to be held on Monday, October 24 at the Museum of the City of New York, will feature Henrietta Mantooth in conversation with conservator Jennifer Hickey.
