Let’s Mobilize: What is Feminist Pedagogy?
Welcome to a three-day investigation of feminist and queer pedagogies. What do they mean today, why are they urgent, and how can they be enacted inside and outside of institutional settings?
How can we understand justice and diversity in ways that are not blind to differences in gender, sexual orientation, race, class and dis/ability in the name of equality? How can feminist and queer admission policies be developed and implemented within institutions? Can management be thought of more in terms of care than administration? What does it actually require to decolonize the curriculum? What is possible within self-organized learning environments that is not within the institution? When do we learn? How is knowledge transmitted and validated? What is the agency of publishing and documenting, of citation practices? What are the acquisition politics of our libraries and databases? How can we broaden our understanding of feminist and non-Eurocentric knowledge? What kind of resources are we accessing to do so?

This mobilisation is the culmination of Valand Academy’s 150 year anniversary and builds on two previous events: the Critical Practice Conference (October 2015) and the Meaning Making Meaning exhibition (March–April 2016).

Photography in Print & Circulation symposium
Valand Academy and the Hasselblad Foundation are co-hosting a symposium on the expanded field of contemporary photo books. The event will reflect on the book as a unique format for showing and circulating photography based art. It will also address the importance of distribution networks and contemporary practices of digital publishing. More

Anatomising the Museum III: Contemporary Art and the De-colonisation of Museums
This third event in the series exploring contemporary intersections of experimental museology, critical art practices and curatorial research, will examine the controversial prospect of bringing contemporary artistic ideas and practices into the larger project of museum decolonisation. Through cross-disciplinary discussions and workshops involving curators, museum professionals, artists and academics, we will debate the discourses, implications, and impacts of artistic and cultural “de-colonising” interventions, and evaluate specific examples of creative strategies, rituals, and artistic processes that address this theme. About Valand Academy
The Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, is a centre for the development of the independent artist/author/film-maker/photographer. We provide courses and programmes (BA, MFA, PhD) in the fields of film, photography, fine art and literary composition.
Our students come from different countries, cultural heritages and perspectives and we actively encourage cross-cultural dialogue. We are also concerned to ensure that our programmes address the diversity of perspective, politic, representation and experience of the contemporary world. The student body is an active participant in the planning and development of the academy’s education, research and collaboration with the wider world.
The Academy hosts a lively research community, including several prestigious nationally funded research projects in the areas of artist-led culture, social practice, queer cinema, contemporary poetry, and photographic archives/imaging practices in environmental and climate science.
