IDSVA proudly announces an extraordinary showing by its students, alumni, and faculty at this year’s SECAC conference, held in Roanoke VA, October 2016.
Dr. Simonetta Moro (IDSVA Director) co-chaired a panel with Rebecca Hackemann, Vision Machines and Pre-Cinematic Optical Devices: Panoramas, Stereoscopes and Places of Otherness. She also had an artwork in the juried exhibition at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University.
Dr. Gregory Blair (alumnus) Presented the paper “Place-Produced Thought and the Agency of Place” as part of the Regionalist Globalism: Considering the Process of Locality panel, chaired by Alissa de Wit-Paul.
Dr. Heather E. Dunn (alumna) Presented the paper “Street Art, Political Activism, and Surveillance,” for the panel The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: Street Art, Installations and Performance: Art as Vehicles for Political and Social Change, chaired by Eric Schruers.
Deborah A. Bouchette (PhD candidate) Presented the paper “Line as the Essence of Becoming-Artist,” in the session Philosophic Formalism, chaired by Anthony Morris.
Susan Johnson (PhD candidate) Presented the paper “Making Space: The Dessein of en Plein Air Painting – Simultaneity in Monet’s Nymphéas de l’Orangerie,” in the session Philosophic Formalism, chaired by Anthony Morris. Susan Johnson received a Gulnar Bosch Travel Award.
Angelalynn Dunlop (PhD candidate) Presented the paper “Technological Metamorphosis” in the session The Body As A Canvas: Exploring the Art of Body Modification, chaired by Christopher LeClere.
Mary Mazurek (PhD candidate) Chaired the session Sound-Art and Subjectivity: Pushing the Boundaries of Art and Music, and presented the paper “Noise Music: The Transduction of Abjection.”
Jason Hoelscher (PhD candidate) Presented the paper “Sonic Instauration and the Contextural Subject” in the panel chaired by Mary Mazurek.
Jennifer Rissler (PhD candidate) Chaired the panel Limitations and Artistic Practice: Toward a Philosophical Reexamination. Three of the five panelists were IDSVA PhD candidates: Gabriel Reed presented the paper “Lucio Fontana’s Spatialism: The Work of Plasticity in the Ceramics Aesthetic”; Keren Moscovitch presented the paper “Thee Sublime: Orgasm as Poetic Resistance in the Works of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Thee Temple ov PsychickYouth”; Jeff Siemers presented the paper “Beings Toward Suicide: An Intersubjective Approach to the Artwork of On Kawara.”
