The expansive conversations around print media in the MFA in Print Media program at Pacific Northwest College of Art are fueled by artists such as Wangechi Mutu, part of our Jordan D. Schnitzer Exhibition and Visiting Artist Lecture Series. The series brings visiting artists as well as curated exhibitions from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation to the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at PNCA. With Mutu and other visiting artists, we push forward the conversation not only about what a print can be but also what it can do.
If a work is solely in digital form, how do we talk about it as a print? What happens when we embrace multidisciplinary work that includes video and performance within a printmaking practice? How can an edition of objects be informed by the traditional considerations of printmaking? What are the ways in which a print can take on site-specific concerns? In asking questions like these, we are pushing toward the horizons of printmaking. Grounding our inquiry in the traditions of craft, collaboration, and community inherent in printmaking, we are asking: how far can we take it?
Now PNCA’s MFA in Print Media program is pleased to announce the Gamblin Print Media Lecture Series. This is a continuation of our partnership with Gamblin, whose Watershed grey is named after our professional print publishing program. The Gamblin series brings contemporary artists pushing the boundaries of print media to campus for intimate discussions around craft, materials, and collaborations.
PNCA’S MFA in Print Media program works in one of the most comprehensive and dynamic print labs in the country. And every door on campus is open to students from large format digital labs and a digital fabrication lab to wood, ceramic, and metal facilities. Through work on both individual and collaborative projects, students are readied to pursue a variety of pathways into industry, research, commercial applications, education, and the broad fields of fine art and design.
