The UCL Slade School of Fine Art is currently welcoming MA/MFA Fine Art applications for 2017 entry.

The Slade is a vibrant and dynamic art school at the forefront of art education and with an established history of excellence. Set at the heart of UCL, and in the centre of London, the Slade brings together students from countries throughout the world, offering a creative and stimulating environment in which to develop fine art practice.

The Slade offerstwo Masters degrees in Fine Art: an MA and an MFA. The MA is a two calendar year (24 month) studio based programme with a history and theory of art component. The MFA is a two academic year (18 month) studio based programme including a Critical Studies component.

For 2017/18 entrants, we are delighted to be able to offer a range of full-tuition fee scholarshipsfor UK/EU students and partial fee-waivers for overseas students in addition to those offered by UCL. All eligible students will be considered for these at the point of admission. Full information on fees, funding, scholarships, bursaries and prizes can be found at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/slade/degrees/ma-mfa

Students on the MA and MFA follow the same studio course and work alongside each other in their chosen studio discipline of Painting, Sculpture or Fine Art Media (which includes electronic media, photography, print, film, video and sound). Both programmes provide an intellectual and creative environment in which you can develop your individual potential as a professional artist, conducting independent research in your chosen area of study. The practice of contemporary art and the history and theories that inform it are approached in an open, experimental and imaginative way.

The studio programme is delivered through studio critiques, tutorials, workshops and lectures. In the first year the emphasis is placed on investigation and experimentation, as well as developing theoretical and technical skills. The second year builds on and consolidates the learning and experimentation of the first year in readiness for the final degree show, and a career as a practicing artist. All studio staff are practicing artists with significant exhibition profiles, and our History and Theory of Art staff are scholars with established public profiles.

There are a number of professional practice opportunities including commission competitions and awards offered to Slade students on the course. Recent commissioned artworks include a site-specific painting for the entrance of UCL’s Grant Museum and performance events at Camden Arts Centre.  Awards include the Red Mansion Prize, which comprises a month residency in Beijing, China; and the Adrian Carruthers Award, an ACME studio for one year awarded to a graduating student.

Our facilities includeSlade workshops for print, 3-D print, bookbinding, electronic media, sculpture, painting, photography, film, video and sound. A range of research initiatives take place throughout the year at the Slade Research Centre in Woburn Square. Our students have access to a wide range of other facilities within UCL, including its many libraries, the UCL Art Museum and UCL’s Institute of Making—see www.instituteofmaking.org.uk. Our location in the centre of London enables easy access to a wide range of unparalleled learning and cultural resources, including many galleries, museums, libraries, cultural institutions and theatres.
