The new L.A. Summer Residency at Otis College of Art and Design announced the first wave of artists and curators for its June residency including keynote speeches by Lesli Linka Glatter and Paul Schimmel. The programming offered by this slate of top artists and curators will expand the offerings of the inaugural session taking place from June 4 through 25, 2017.
“This residency will provide a much needed opportunity to artists and designers worldwide to be stimulated by the rich and robust L.A. cultural community and to participate with thought-provoking mentors and colleagues,” said Bruce W. Ferguson, president of Otis College, at the announcement of the new residency.
In addition to the keynote speakers, participants in the L.A. Summer Residency will have many opportunities to engage with the art and design community of Los Angeles through portfolio reviews, critiques, and discussions with leading artists and curators including:
–Connie Butler, Chief Curator, Hammer Museum in Los Angeles
–Meg Cranston, artist and Chair of Fine Arts, Otis College
–Sam Durant, multimedia artist
–Suzanne Isken, Executive Director, Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum
–Jo Lauria, author and curator, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
–Shamim M. Momin, Director, Curator, and Co-Founder, Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND)
–Aram Moshayedi, curator, Hammer Museum in Los Angeles
–Eve Schillo, curatorial assistant, Wallis Annenberg Photography Department, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
–and Jennifer Steinkamp, installation artist who works with video and new media
Keynote speakers for 2017 L.A. Summer Residency include:
Lesli Linka Glatter is a film and television director whose first film, Tales of Meeting and Parting, was nominated for an Academy Award in the Live Action Short Film category. She has directed pilots and episodes for major television series including ER, NYPD Blue, Freaks and Geaks, The Gilmore Girls, The West Wing, Pretty Little Liars, True Blood, The Newsroom, and more. She has received three Directors Guild of America Best Director for a Dramatic Series awards and has received four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, for the Mad Men and Homeland. She is on the DGA Committee for Diversity and is a newly elected member of the Academy of Motion Picture and Arts and Sciences.
Paul Schimmel is a curator of contemporary art based in Los Angeles. Formerly chief curator of the Newport Harbor Art Museum (now Orange County Museum of Art), Newport Beach, and chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Los Angeles, Schimmel has played a pivotal role in establishing Southern California’s unique contemporary art scene as a potent force on the global cultural stage. In a series of memorable exhibitions and publications, he has examined the artists whose work and lives have defined the city. He is currently a vice president and partner with the art gallery Hauser & Wirth and co-founder of Hauser Wirth & Schimmel in Los Angeles.
Through unlimited access to Otis College’s advanced production studios, the L.A. Summer Residency will provide participants an opportunity to produce unique work and investigate new ideas. Accepted artists and designers will be hosted in Otis College’s new housing and dining complex on its Goldsmith campus. Participants will be selected through a competitive application process. Applications are due February 28, 2017.
