The MFA program in Studio Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a vibrant and dynamic curriculum that provides graduate students the opportunity to work across disciplinary boundaries and engage with a dedicated group of diverse faculty. Set in a growing arts and culture center of North Carolina, UNC offers a stimulating and nurturing intellectual environment in which to develop a studio art practice that is well positioned within contemporary art discourse. Students are encouraged to work across disciplines including painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image, performance, and social practice.
Through our Visiting Artist Professional Program, our Hanes Visiting Artists Lecture series, as well as Teaching Assistantships and teaching practicums, the MFA program at UNC Chapel Hill has a rigorous focus on professional practices and preparing graduate students to teach on the university level. Graduate students have obtained faculty positions at the City College of New York, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Alfred University, Guilford College, Auburn University, the University of Mary Washington, and Lafayette College. Recent MFA graduates have also been awarded numerous grants and residencies, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Banff Center Residency, Yaddo, and the Headlands Center for the Arts, among others.
Past guests include Paddy Johnson, Sarah Workneh, Sara Reisman, Lisa Dent, Edra Soto, Edgar Arceneaux, Lucy Raven, Kevin Everson, Amanda Ross-Ho, Mendi + Keith Obadike, Farrah Karapetian, Ruben Ochoa, Mark Tribe, Arthur Ou, Simon Leung, Shana Moulton, Liz Magic Laser, Chitra Ganesh, and Mary Reid Kelley.
For 2017/18 entrants, we are excited to offer a range of fully funded merit fellowships, teaching fellowships,and partial fellowships for local and national applicants. All eligible students will be considered for these upon admission to the program.
