Otis College of Art and Design’s MFA programs provide rigorous, intimate, practice-based studies connecting a distinguished faculty with a global student body. Their multidisciplinary approach to developing an artistic vision and practice equips you to thrive within the international landscape of art, design, and writing.
In addition to work within your chosen field, your evolving practice is also enriched through critiques and symposia across disciplines with visiting artists and writers and through studio tours, public lectures, and readings. Teaching and publishing fellowships provide you further access to professional mentors who help you to shape pathways to your future career. Students also have unique opportunities to participate in internships, residencies, workshops, and faculty-led travel study worldwide.

MFA in Fine Arts
In a high-ceilinged warehouse in Culver City’s burgeoning arts district, students have individual skylighted studios. Working with distinguished practicing artist faculty members, they develop a personal vision that has been filtered through history, gender, sexuality, culture, and politics. They acquire the necessary technical and theoretical resources to develop an understanding of the demands of a professional practice. The program promotes strong interaction and critical dialogue among all participants, encouraging students to converse in the language of art.
MFA in Graphic Design
The limited-residency MFA in Graphic Design provides a rigorous and challenging academic and studio environment for candidates interested in enhancing their current professional practice. Participants select from three individual themes or tracks: social responsibility of the designer in society, typography and type design, or advancing the discipline through theory and innovation. Each track speaks directly to educating conscientious individuals who recognize the value of design and its role in society.
MFA in Public Practice
Public practice—also called participatory art, community art, public art, situational art or social sculpture—consists of media including video, performance, drawing, photography, sculpture and web-based projects.
MFA in Writing
An emerging author today will work in many forms over the course of his or her career—Otis College prepares its students for a full range of possibilities. Our students are free to write in any genre they choose without needing to declare a concentration, and our Workshops reflect this openness. This team-taught interdisciplinary approach fosters experimentation, cross-pollination, and unexpected discoveries.
