The University of Texas at Austin’s Studio Art program has developed an interdisciplinary environment of high expectation: self-motivation, intellectual capacity and responsibility. Our faculty find these conditions best promote an artist’s ability to develop work of the greatest consequence. Within our well-equipped facilities, students explore the various disciplines’ parameters, depths and overlaps, discovering applications to new and traditional modes of expression while simultaneously examining links between art and the world. Ours is a vital community of diverse and engaged artists. Professionally active faculty, knowledgeable technical staff, a vital visiting artist and critic program and the tremendous research facilities housed at the University of Texas foster our creative community.
This is a particularly auspicious year as we launch our completely redesigned and re-imagined graduate program. We are now a two-year (rather than three) program. This is a fast-paced, full-time, studio-intensive interdisciplinary degree program that takes full advantage of the university’s physical, technical and intellectual resources. Students can choose to work in depth in a particular area or across any of our five disciplines: Painting/Drawing, Photography, Print, Sculpture + Extended Media, and Transmedia. Additionally, we are now on our third year of the successful reciprocal exchange program between the Royal College of Art in London and ours. Each fall we send a second-year studio art grad to the RCA for the semester while they, in turn, send one of their second year students to study here at UT. We are all immeasurably the richer for it! The Master of Fine Arts at the Maine College of Art offers an interdisciplinary approach that encourages students to think across traditional artistic boundaries while challenging their making habits and intellectual curiosity. The two-year, trimester structure emphasizes the intersection of studio production, individual research, critical analysis, curatorial experimentation, and travel to inspiring and important cultural sites. Built on a rigorous curriculum and an exceptional commitment to one-on-one student mentoring by distinguished faculty, visiting artists, critics, and curators, our MFA program offers a dynamic and supportive learning environment for artists who want to define and pursue a sustainable and attainable vision for their art practice.

Both of the Maine College of Art’s MFA paths offer an interdisciplinary approach that encourages students to think across traditional academic boundaries and challenge their art practice and intellectual curiosity. The curriculum emphasizes the intersection of studio production, individual research, and critical analysis. This structure promotes the development of a sustainable lifelong practice.
Among the first low-residency Master of Fine Art programs in the country, ours combines intense periods of on-campus instruction in Portland, Maine with the freedom and independence of working from any home location. The full-residency MFA gives students the option of moving to Portland to work in the center of the arts district with 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities within a vibrant creative community. Each student receives a teaching assistantship and an individual studio with 24/7 access.

Summer Intensive visiting faculty:
MFA visiting artists deliver public lectures, attend critiques, and conduct studio visits with graduate candidates during their week-long visits.2016 visiting faculty included Huma Bhabha, Keith Edmier, Seth Goldenberg (MFA ’05), Ann Hirsch, Lori Nix, Jim Shaw, and Hrag Vartanian.
