Art by Translation is open to young artists and curators seeking to further their research through a postgraduate program dedicated to a specific theme. The first three-year theme is: Translations in the arts.
Applications are for the period March 2017–March 2018 (extensible depending on projects).
Art by Translation proposes an experimental platform allowing projects to develop organically in various contexts and in different forms: artworks, architectural constructions, exhibitions, study sessions, symposia and publications with prominent invited lecturers. Its model breaks with the classical “research-exhibition-publication” chronology and aims to reconfigure the traditional boundaries between disciplines. The program stimulates collaborations and exchanges, encouraging the redistribution of roles and competencies. Projects are not considered as final results but rather as stages in a process and points of departure for further elaborations.
Art by Translation is organized by three institutions, the CNEAI=, Chatou / Pantin, École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy and the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts TALM Angers in partnership with: La Galerie, CAC, Noisy-le-sec, Galerie Michèle Didier in France; The James Gallery, The Graduate Center (CUNY), Barnard College, Emily Harvey Foundation in New York; Fonderie Darling, Centre Canadien d’Architecture (CCA) in Montreal; Faculté d’Architecture La Cambre Horta, Université Libre de Bruxelles; California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles; AiR 351 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Three main projects will act as case studies or research models.
–The House of Dust by Alison Knowles at CNEAI= Chatou / Pantin (Centre National Édition Art Image,) La Galerie, centre d’art contemporain, Noisy-le-sec, the ESBA TALM Angers and the Fonderie Darling, Montreal. Each exhibition will be the occasion for the generation of new individual and collective works based on seminars and workshops (March 7 through 17 and April 18 through 28) before and during the exhibitions (June-August in Montreal / September-November in Paris).
–The exhibition The Singer Notes by Mel Bochner at the Michèle Didier Gallery (September through November) will be the occasion to explore the relations between language and its contexts with the artist and scholars.
–Study sessions will be organized on interspecies communication with A Constructed World, Jeff Guess, Katarzyna Krakowiak.

Conditions
The four selected candidates will benefit from travel and production budget. A contract will be signed with the institution. Housing will be covered when possible but not in all locations.
The selected candidates will participate in the program’s work sessions (one to two weeks each), and exhibitions, produce works and present their work in various contexts. All workshops, guest lectures and costs related to other curricular activities are covered by Art by Translation. There are no tuition fees.
