CSAV – Artists Research Laboratory is an experimental platform designed to stimulate formal and informal discussions and exchanges among artists of different generations and nationalities. It aims to explore different forms of art-making through un-institutional teaching methods and presents a highly flexible structure, which will be shaped in dialogue with the invited artists. Between 15 and 20 young artists from all nationalities will be selected. They will attend daily workshops and seminars run by the invited artists and guest lecturers. The application and the laboratory are free of charge.
Departing from its usual format, the XXIII edition of the Artists Research Laboratory will focus on a unifying theme rather than on a single artist’s practice. Hannah Black, Michael Dean, Russell Haswell and Karl Holmqvist will lead seminars and encounters, focusing on the ways in which the relation between thoughts and objects, acts and language, sound and words may be cemented or broadened. The 2017 edition will gravitate around these artists shared interest in the ties between physical presence and language, sound, sculpture, performance and poetry. At its core will be a desire to destabilise one’s own voice and to create a highly edited individual idiom capable of returning the tone, colour and history of everyday speech.
A shared interest in crafting objects, images, sounds, and speech from and through that which capital considers noise, material at once unproductive and exploitable, unites the four invited artists and will provide a core theme for the Laboratory.
Hannah Black (b. 1981, UK) is an artist/writer. Her work is concerned with notions of the body and identity and the politics of intimacy and alienation.
Michael Dean (b. 1977, UK) is a visual artist, working across sculpture, photography, drawing and performance, all of which are rooted in his writing and in publication projects.
Russell Haswell (b. 1970, UK) is a multidisciplinary artist, a record producer, a musician, and a curator.
Karl Holmqvist (b. 1964, Sweden) is an artist working with language in formats such as spoken word, artist’s books and room size installations.
The laboratory is directed by Lorenzo Benedetti, Gregorio Magnani and Annie Ratti.
