For the first time, the MFA Visual Narrative program at the School of Visual Arts in NYC is offering an Educator’s Scholarship, providing up to three scholarship awards annually to support educators in attaining their MFA while continuing to teach. Each Educator’s Scholarship award will cover 10–50% of tuition costs for the duration of study in the low-residency program.
The MFA Visual Narrative program is designed for working professionals, educators and recent graduates from all creative disciplines who are dedicated to the art, craft and advancement of their professional visual storytelling practice as both artist and author. Comprised of three eight-week summer intensives in NYC and two academic years online, the MFA Visual Narrative program places equal emphasis on students’ development in both creative writing and visual expression across media. The schedule for the NYC-based summer sessions at SVA meshes well with the standard academic calendar- for example, the 2017 schedule runs from June 2 through July 28. SVA housing is available. The fall and spring semesters are part-time and online, so each student can balance out their own work schedules and lifestyle while pursuing their MFA in any location.
To be considered for the Educator’s Scholarship, the candidate should be currently teaching two or more classes in an accredited college or university with at least two years teaching experience. Online and international classes are eligible. Educators can also qualify for merit-based department scholarships as part of the general applicant pool.
All candidates are encouraged to submit applications by February to be considered for first-round reviews and merit-based scholarships, as well as the Educator’s Scholarship. The second round review deadline is March 1. Remaining admissions and awards will continue on a rolling basis as space allows.
The MFA Visual Narrative program is chaired by editorial illustrator and narrative artist Nathan Fox. His work has appeared in The New York Times, EW, Rolling Stone, Image, Marvel comics, and Scholastic Graphix along with visual development projects for MTV, Nickelodeon, Burton, Nike, 1800, AOL and many more. Faculty include such diverse professional storytellers as author Lisa Cron; editor and publisher Bill Kartalopoulos; historian and critic Leonard Marcus; photographer Stacy Renee Morrison; director Christina Roussos; designer/animator/mapmaker Tim Szetela; comic book artist and designer Jim Rugg; author Mark Sable; writer/game producer Ben Zackheim and television writer Ed Valentine, among others.
