How can schools become places where desirable futures are built? In the spirit of the groundbreaking 1915 work Schools of To-Morrow by the American philosopher John Dewey, HKW’s Schools of Tomorrow is setting out to explore what experimental practices from the past and current experiences around the world can be applied to reimagine learning in our times of profound transformation.
From May 4 to 6, 2017 the kick-off conference will gather school practitioners, scientists, artists and young activists to examine the issues at stake in presentations, readings, test case analyses and workshop situations. What kind of society do we want to live in, how can schools contribute to build better futures? What new alliances are needed to make schools places where students, teachers and the wider community can come together and understand how to live well and wisely? How can we critically reassess the relationship between humans and technology? What role could art play as a way of knowing and learning?
The legacy of progressive education and critical pedagogy will serve as a shared horizon for exploring these questions. The results of the conference will form the starting point for a series of school projects that will be implemented in the 2017–18 school year.

In the 2017-2018 school year, HKW and the weekly DIE ZEIT are holding a competition for ideas asking children in Germany and Austria how they envision their ideal school. A jury will select the most promising entries and the winners will travel to Berlin in June 2018 for the closing presentation of Schools of Tomorrow. The various ideas will become part of a children’s manifesto. Students from all grades can participate individually, in groups or as classes. Entry period: June 2017 until January 2018.
