Hayal İncedoğan: The Century of Loneliness Vol. I

Anna Laudel Düsseldorf presents multidisciplinary artist Hayal İncedoğan’s solo exhibition The Century of Loneliness Vol. I between January 19–March 10, 2023.

The exhibition involves artworks consisting of different techniques that range from canvas paintings and sound videos to neon installations, and mirror products. Curated by Ekrem Yalçındağ, the exhibition is designed with holistic dialogues as reflections that develop around the concept of motives and carry the traces of mostly conceptual thinking. 

As the title indicates,The Century of Loneliness Vol. I is the first part of a two-step exhibition series. The artist depicts a period of this century in a different way by addressing the political, economic, sociological and psychological transformations related to the impact of the events that have taken place both in Turkey and in the world since the beginning of the current century. 

The exhibition centers around a comparative interpretation and a holistic language related to the concepts of motif, leitmotif, and nostalgia, including literature, music, and cinematic references.

The artist invites visitors to a multi-layered investigation with readings inspired by Romanticism, Classicism, Baroque music, philosophy, literature, and art history, in order to demonstrate the path of art practice from today to the past. The exhibition offers a new perspective of the 21st century with an aim to establish multidisciplinary dialogues.

Inspired by a wide spectrum, ranging from the individual to the collective, and from politics to psychology; the exhibition revisits many issues that have been ignored and left out of the main arteries of the century in different contexts. 

Hayal İncedoğan’s first solo exhibition in Germany, The Century of Loneliness Vol. I can be visited at Anna Laudel Düsseldorf until March 10, 2023. 

Hayal İncedoğan
Born in Izmir, the artist completed her undergraduate and master studies at the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University. She still continues her doctoral studies in the same faculty in the Department of Art and Design and works as an academician. In 2005, within the scope of the international project titled ‘Young Artists in the European Museums” which was realized worldwide, she prepared and exhibited work with reference to the ceramic collection of the Pera Museum. In 2007, she won a scholarship from the New York School of Visual Arts University with the sponsorship of the Turkish American Association and showcased her first exhibition in New York with her project in the field of new media. In 2010, her works were exhibited at the international exhibition titled The Last 60 Years of Contemporary Turkish Art, followed by the Osthaus Museum in Germany, and also exhibited as a part of the Ruhr & Pecs 2010 Capital of Culture Project. Other solo projects include The wind is Wild (Vehbi Koç Foundation American Hospital Art Gallery Operation Room 2012), Lilac Wine Vol. I (Art On Istanbul, 2014), Sound of Infinite (Pera Palace Hotel, 2015) and at Anna Laudel Gallery named In the Shadow of Time held in late 2019.

Her works have been displayed in various museums and institutions in different countries such as the USA, Germany, Australia, Finland, Spain, Hungary, and the United Arab Emirates. She has works in countless corporate and private collections such as Istanbul Modern Art Museum Collection, T.R. Ministry of Foreign Affairs Collection, Elgiz Museum Contemporary Art Collection, and Vehbi Koc Foundation Art Collection. She continues her studies with national and international projects.
