Curating, Image and Community Culture
November 15–December 16, 2015
One of the starting points of Jimei X Arles: East West Encounters International Photo Festival comes from the death of Paul Ronald this year, which suggests the end of this era and freezes time to become eternal. Another starting point of the Jimei X Arles project emerges from the rise of social media since 2005, as well as from the phenomena of social reality such as selfies, snapshots, instant photography, private photography, which are all aroused by mobile terminals.
Just like the emergence of photography, the aesthetic forms of many images are still between art and social activities. However, considering the progress from capturing light and shade by film to recording the phenomenon, time and event at any moment, and from careful composition to various forms of aesthetic, special to the super planar integration of forms, photography has never been so diverse, accessible and graceful as today.
Many artists and curators are pondering over the way of building the bridge of communication between image and today’s daily life as well as the changing and virtual world. If this bridge of communication is established on different geographical relations, the “locality” and “future” will be revealed strongly. Just like the game scene applied in Li Shu’s work, the “flash mob” by Zhang Zengzeng in Hong Kong, the “electronic eye” by Wu Juehui and the interactive images by Hu Jieming, all of them involve the specific actions and the transformation of aesthetics, which not only form the contextual relationship with Jimei X Arles Photo Festival, but also announce the coming of a new era.
