The Institute of Fine Art at the Braunschweig University of Art is currently seeking to fill the position of Professor of Fine Art / Foundation Class, with a focus on Sculpture, Salary Scale W2 NBesG, with the starting date April 1, 2021:

The successful candidate will be appointed under German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee. This is a permanent appointment.

We are looking for an artist whose work constitutes a substantial contribution to the field of contemporary art and works within sculpture in a multifaceted way. The four foundation class professors at the Institute of Fine Art are each in charge of individual classes, but should cooperate with each other and promote exchanges between the individual foundation classes. Since teaching in the foundation classes—which include students of fine art as well as students of art education—has so far been exclusively in German, a sufficient knowledge of German (B2 level at the time of employment) is a mandatory requirement.

Responsibilities of the professorship:
–to teach a wide range of sculptural approaches and techniques
–to present, experiment with and discuss various aspects of sculpture in an open process and in cooperation with the relevant workshops
–to lead students to an independent artistic practice (primarily in the field of sculpture, employing all kinds of materials) and to develop the ability to reflect on their works, placing them in the context of a current artistic discourse
–experimentation with different currents in contemporary art
–to teach theory and practice regarding artistic issues and processes
–to teach self-reflexive approaches to the role of an artist
–to encourage a constructive group dynamic and critical discourse within the foundation class
–to provide a broad overview of the current art scene (e.g. through visits to festivals, exhibitions and studios) with a focus on the medium of sculpture
–to contribute to teacher training (teaching in the foundation classes takes place with the students of fine art as well as students of art education)
–to collaborate in the artistic admission procedures and their development as well as in advising applicants
–to further develop their own artistic practice at the university

Required qualifications are:
–a university degree
–pedagogical-didactic qualifications as proven through practical experience
–exceptional artistic practice, proven by a body of work which constitutes a substantial contribution to the field of sculpture, a considerable exhibition activity and publications
–additional artistic achievements, proven by an open approach towards the medium of sculpture and the different currents and developments in the field of contemporary art in general, a visibly broad approach in their own artistic work and at least 5 years of independent artistic practice
–excellent knowledge in the field of contemporary art and proven experience with a wide range of sculptural approaches and techniques
–an ability for artistic and discursive self-reflection
–an openness towards different study goals and processes (fine art and art education)
–a very good network of institutions of fine art

Candidates are expected to demonstrate social skills, leadership skills and gender awareness as well as to participate in academic self-governance.

Further requirements of the position are defined under Section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz of June 15, 2017).

The HBK Braunschweig is committed to increasing the proportion of women in art, research and teaching as one of its strategic goals. We therefore explicitly encourage women to apply. Where candidates have equal qualifications under the relevant regulations, preference will be given to female candidates.

Subject to the same provisions, preference will also be given to candidates with disabilities (please enclose evidence of the relevant disability with your application).

The HBK Braunschweig cultivates a culture of diversity. We therefore particularly welcome applications from candidates who will increase the diversity of our staff and student body or who are actively working towards a culture of diversity.

The HBK Braunschweig is a member of the Dual Career Network (South-East Lower Saxony) and offers support to candidates and their families in managing dual careers.

This position is suitable for part-time employment.
