Seeking University Professor in Art History with a focus on Contemporary Art

The Institute of Art History at the Braunschweig University of Art is currently seeking to fill the following professorship with the starting date April 1, 2020: University Professor in Art History with a focus on Contemporary Art, Salary Scale W3 NBesG.

The successful candidate will be appointed under German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee. This is a permanent appointment.

The central purpose of the professorship is the academic study of contemporary art and related theories in teaching and research. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate outstanding knowledge of European and global art and be confident in discussing current theories and methodologies in contemporary art at the highest level. They must also demonstrate awareness of the intermedial interdependencies currently resulting from digitization and an ability to engage meaningfully with the debates arising from these in contemporary art.

The successful candidate will primarily undertake teaching in the context of the BA and MA degree programmes in Art History. However, the university is intentionally structured to encourage cross-disciplinary work and as such, seminars and lectures in this subject may also be relevant for students of Fine Art (including Art for the Teaching Profession) and Media Studies.

As the HBK Braunschweig has the status of a university (i.e. it has the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral (Habilitation) degrees), the appointed candidate will be expected to develop her/his own subjects of research  and to actively participate in (interdisciplinary) networks within the HBK Braunschweig and with regional, national and international museums, collections and/or universities. They are also expected to play an active role in external funding and in academic self-governance. All candidates are expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of written and spoken German as well as social awareness, leadership skills and gender sensitivity.

Ideally, candidates will also demonstrate awareness and understanding of the most recent discussions in gender studies, institutional critique, postcolonial studies and other current theoretical approaches relevant to art, art history and aesthetics, sociology and curatorial practice. We are also interested in candidates who have the ability and enthusiasm to establish collaborative partnerships with local contemporary art collections and museums and with other national and international universities, art colleges and other establishments.

Further requirements of the position are defined under Section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz of 15 June 2017).
