12 works by Gregor Schneider and Miwa Yanagi’s open-air performance to be shown in Kobe City
Organized by the Kobe Cultural Foundation under the theme of “transcend and move beyond,” ART PROJECT KOBE 2019: TRANS- will be held for the first time this year. To commemorate its inauguration, Gregor Schneider and Miwa Yanagi will participate in the first installment of the project.
The venues for this project, Hyogo Port, Shinkaichi, and Shin-Nagata, are areas with historical links to Kobe that are located west of the urban districts of Sannomiya and Motomachi. Long before the present-day port was built, the harbor was established by the 12th century military leader Taira no Kiyomori. In the Edo Period (1603–1868), the harbor, known as Hyogo no Tsu, flourished as a commercial entryway to the region. Then in the Meiji Period(1868–1912), these areas prospered due to the development of heavy industries. Following a series of changes in the urban structure and the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, much of the life went out of Kobe and these areas inevitably began to decline. But it was precisely for this reason that the town became an attractive motif or context for a certain type of artist.
Gregor Schneider will present 12 works in 10 locations collectively titled End of the Museumー12 Stations. As visitors make their way to each of the stations, they will become a wayfarer in the world of Gregor Schneider. Meanwhile, Kobe-born artist Miwa Yanagi will present a new edition of the open-air performance The Wing of the Sun, a traveling theater performance based on a novel by Kenji Nakagami, staged on and around an unfolding trailer made in Taiwan, in a half-sea, half-land venue.
Drawing a distinction from various other art festivals, this project will focus on just two artists. In addition, the venues for this event will intentionally take place outside of major museums and exhibition sites, inviting the artists to create works using the city of Kobe and its inhabitants.
