Hyde Park Art Center proudly announces the 7th iteration of the Jackman Goldwasser Residency. Each year, this highly selective residency provides a platform for international, national, and local artists and curators to take creative risks within their practice and expand professional networks in the context of a community-focused art space. Launched in 2012, the Jackman Goldwasser Residency facilitates relationships between visiting artists and the city’s wealth of resources to develop artists’ work and enrich the context for making in Chicago.
2019 resident artists: Jared Brown (Chicago), Leticia Contreras (Houston), Kelvin Hazel (Ghana), Nesrine Khodr (Beirut), Roberton Walton (Australia), Gabriel Villa (Chicago), Fo Wilson (Chicago)
2019 visiting curator: Marina Reyes Franco (Puerto Rico)
International visiting artists include Robert Walton of Melbourne (January through February and April), whose practice spans theatre, installation, writing, and media art, and this year will join in with the Goat Island collaborative performance group of Chicago. Visiting curator Marina Reyes Franco (April 15 through 29) has extensively researched notions of politically motivated art, and is co-founder and former director of the La Ene museum-as-project in Buenos Aires.
The Art Center also embarks on the third round of the 2:2:2: Exchange with Project Row Houses (Houston). Initiated in 2014, this exchange provides an opportunity for artists to research localized ways of making in a different city, to enhance their practices at home. Letitia Contreras (May 1 through June 5) is this year’s resident from Houston, and defining her practice as “This queer, afro-xicana, tejana hopes to cultivate and curate a digi-space that holds room for celebration,grieving, healing, and reflection.” Angela Davis Fegan (May 27 through July 7) is a native of Chicago’s South Side will take her feminst forward, DIY handcrafted paper practice to Houston, to expand her network of socially contextualized political objects.
Kelvin Haizel (June 10 through July 14) from Ghana, continues the Art Center’s relationship with alumni of the Asiko Art School, and introduces his investigations of the contemporary condition of image-making and expression through video, photography, installations and objects. Nesrine Khodr (July 29 through September 9) visits from Beirut and is an artist and television producer working in moving image, print, and performance; her work explores perceptions of movement, duration, and distance; gender relations; the power of seduction; intellectual and emotional challenges facing the young generation; and more.
Working alongside these visiting residents are Chicago-based artists Jared Brown, an interdisciplinary artist who broadcasts audio and text-based work through the radio (CENTRAL AIR RADIO, 88.5 FM), in live DJ sets, and on social media; Gabriel Villa, a public and studio artist, who’s formerly served as Director of Yollocalli Arts Reach and gallery curator at the National Museum of Mexican Art; Folayemi (Fo) Wilson, whose art practice crosses interdisciplinary boundaries between the visual arts, sonic media, a regard for the handmade, and a background in design and object making.
Residency and Public Programs Manager, Ariel Gentalen notes, “In 2019, as we invite new collaborations with institutions in Puerto Rico and Beirut, we are also thrilled to continue investing in relationships we’ve built with the Àsìkò School, In/Time and Project Row Houses, through artists working in similar political, social, and interdisciplinary practices as our Chicago-based residents and community.”
