The College for Creative Studies invites applications for the position of Crafts full-time faculty – Glass. This position reports to the Chair of the Crafts Department and is responsible for the administration and management of the Glass studio and curriculum. A “three/three” teaching load is required. Additionally, the candidate is expected to demonstrably contribute to the efficient running of the Crafts Department and participate in general faculty governance.
Applicants must be active, practicing artists with a very strong exhibition record. The preferred candidate will be well versed in the techniques, processes, and contemporary trends specific to the glass medium and its multi-media applications. Fluency with blowing, design, and the commercial use of studio glass are also highly desirable. Candidates must have an MFA in the field of glass with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in an accredited university department or college of art and design. Timeliness and attention to administrative detail are key requirements of the position, as is maintaining clear communication and a collaborative relationship with the Department Chair.
CCS is a private, nonprofit institution located in the heart of Detroit’s Cultural Center adjacent to the world-class encyclopedic Detroit Institute of Arts and in close proximity to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. There are numerous commercial and cooperative galleries and affordable studio space close by. The College is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading art and design schools with state-of-the-art facilities. CCS currently enrolls more than 1,300 degree students. It offers undergraduate degrees in eleven majors: Advertising, Art Education, Crafts, Entertainment Arts, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography, Product Design, and Transportation Design. It also offers MFA degrees in Color and Materials, Interaction, Interdisciplinary, and Transportation Design (see insideccs.com).
The CCS glass studio has recently been renovated to support the complete range of creative expression, from traditional glassblowing to conceptual, multi-media productions. The primary studio is 2,000 square feet with facilities for hot and cold working. Equipment includes two furnaces for glassblowing and one for casting, five glory holes, annealing and casting kilns, and other tools for mold making, cutting, grinding, polishing, etc. There is a separate 500-square-foot studio dedicated to students majoring in Glass.
The glass studio is located next to a fully equipped, state-of-the-art ceramics studio and is nearby metalworking, foundry, fabric, and woodworking facilities. Students and faculty also have access to the College’s other facilities and equipment, including printmaking, photography, digital imaging and modeling technology, and extensive rapid prototyping output tools.
The position is currently open with an intended starting date of fall 2014. Rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
